The Paphos region
Feel the romance in the air in the land where Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty, once roamed. Swim in the sea by the rocks known as Petra tou Romiou where she was believed to have risen from the waves, make a pilgrimage to her sanctuary at Kouklia, or visit the grotto near Polis where she was supposed to have bathed. The Pafos (Paphos) region is the perfect place to celebrate a wedding or go for your honeymoon.
Pafos (Paphos) town, with its pleasant harbour and medieval fort, combines a cosmopolitan holiday resort, spectacular countryside and historical sites. The region offers the possibility of combining sea and mountains as well as getting a taste of culture with its many archaeological sites.
Admire the view at Maa-Paleokastro, the site on a peninsula near Coral Bay, where the Mycenaean Greeks first landed in Cyprus in the Bronze Age. Explore inland by going on a wine tour of the villages, stopping off at Chrysorrogiatissa monastery with its fine icons where you can get a taste of the locally produced vintage wine from its own winery. Or indulge in one of the many activities available, from playing a round of golf at a premier golf resort, indulging in a sea sport, such as swimming, diving or sailing, or going for the thrill of a water park or karting centre.
Head for the Polis area where you can experience a back-to-basics lifestyle staying in one of the many renovated traditional houses from where you can explore the countryside. The Akamas peninsula is an area of natural wilderness with dramatic coastlines and sandy coves. Visit one of the last Mediterranean nesting grounds for the green and loggerhead turtles on the sandy beaches of Lara. Or walk along one of the many scenic nature trails spotting rare endemic plants that grow there, or watching migrating birds fly by overhead. Or take a boat trip along the spectacular coastline of what forms part of Aphrodite's playground.
Peyia is a town in Cyprus with population approximately 10,000 residents. Peyia is situated mainly on the steep slopes of the coastal hills inland from Coral Bay, at the southern end of the Akamas Peninsula, and it lies 14 km north of Paphos. It has a large population of British ex-pats and a growing number of holiday homes and apartments. In the town centre can be found a town hall, church, police station and several small shops, restaurants and banks. Due to its hillside location many parts of the town offer views over Coral Bay and Paphos.
Peyia actually covers a large area stretching from the Peyia Forest on the hills high above the village in the north, to the sea in the south, and from the Bay of Maa in the east to the Akamas Peninsula in the west. However the name is used more frequently in respect to the town.
The origin of the name Peyia, is said to derive from the Latin word Baia (Bay) due to the close proximity of Coral Bay (Maa), which served as a natural safe docking for Egyptian cargo vessels dating back to antiquity. The village was first settled by Venetians, during the Venetian Domination of Cyprus (1489-1570), probably by Venetian merchant sailors and or by sailors of the Venetian fleet in conflict with the Ottomans over Cyprus rule.
The beginning of the Ottoman rule (1571-1878), saw the relationship between the Orthodox and the Ottomans healthier than in comparison with the Catholic and Ottomans, as a result many of the Venetian settlements on the island, that of Peyia included, had by then already assimilated into Orthodox Christianity as well as Greek-Cypriot way of life.
Distinctively one can notice that the Greek - Cypriot dialect in this region, including nearby villages of Kathikas, Akoursos, and Kissonerga has a characteristic singing and fluctuating tone that resembles very much the Italian way of speech. This can be more distinctively noticeable in conversations amongst elders.

"As advertised, beautiful gardens, simple layout, had practially everything to be self sufficient!"
From booking to checkout, everything was made easy by Nikolas.
I didn't want to hire a car, so was looking for a villa that offered privacy/seclusion, BUT wasn't to far away and within walking distance to amenties. Villa Mariandy was ideal.
I was little wary booking this villa as there were no previous reviews, but the villa looked/appeared exactly as the pictures showed and with all the services quoted (safe, internet, iron board, iron, air con, etc)
If I had any issues with services inside the Villa, one call or text and maintainence guy was on hand to address.
The villa is located off a main road, and surrounded by open space, but there's a road to the side used by coaches to ferry occupants to the hotels on the harbour/beach! So beware that there is sometimes noise generated as a result.
Buses don't pass near the villa (there is a stop further along the main road), but as mentioned, a walk to Coral Bay Avenue doesn't take that long once you find your bearings.
The only reason why I didnt give the villa 5 out 5 was because I had to clean the pool each morning (no mean feet), but other villas usually have a pool cleaner that comes every other day, and although the villa has all the facilities for self catering, small things like salt/pepper, washing up liquid, and a brush/sponge, toilet paper would have been ideal in the already supplied welcome pack as I found myself purchasing, and then leaving those items...
Although you dont go on holiday to use satelite TV, some english channels would of been nice (BBC/ITV) just to keep abreast of news at home, and in the area around the pool, there was only one large umbrella.
