About this location
The Languedoc-Roussillon region
With its Mediterranean climate, mountains, lakes, long open stretches of sandy beaches, fairytale villages, vineyards, golf, fishing, skiing, canoeing, good food & wine, markets, lots of history and friendly laid back atmosphere, Languedoc has something to offer for everyone. It is the new Provence, but without the crowds. And whilst you are here, why not take a relaxing drive into Spain, after all it is only a day trip away. Languedoc is the biggest wine region in the world with vineyards as far as the eye can see so spend some time sampling the local wines.
Conques-sur-Orbiel is located just outside Carcassonne - 10 minutes drive. The village has a post office, food store (with cheese and meat counter), newsagent, a chemist, public swimming pool & tennis court, a pizzeria, a restaurant , two hairdressers and a cooperative cave where they sell local wines all within walking distance. A large supermarket is only eight minutes drive and the village gets once a week visits from the dairy farmer, butcher and fish monger. There is also a stream for fishing. There are also few good wineries around the village.
To see and do
Visit the medieval citadel of Carcassonne. Explore Cathar castles - Chateau de Peyreperteuse perhaps the most impressive. Visit one of the many lovely historical villages - Minerve, Mirepoix, Rennes-le-Château. Take a trip to Collioure - an old beautiful fishing port with a castle, art galleries, shops and good restaurants.
For everything from food to jewellery, visit one of the many local markets - Carcassonne, Limoux, Narbonne, Mirepoix. The are many good restaurants in the area. For a reasonable priced meal, we can recommend La Courtine located at 4 Place Marcou, La Cité, Carcassonne and for something special Domaine Gayda 11300 Brugairolles and A la Prise d'Alzeau near Lacombe.
Swim in the thermal swimming pool at Rennes-les-Bain or head off to Lake Cavayere or Lac du Montagne. Bring a picnic, rent a canoe and gently paddle on Canal-du-Midi. Build sand castles at one of the many beautiful beaches in the area.
For the children and the young at heart - Go gokarting, visit Australia Park, Meze Dinosaur Park and Réserve Africaine de Sigean - one of Europe's largest wild animal parks.
Play golf at nearby course in Carcassonne, explore Canal du Midi by renting a bike, strolling along its banks, by taking a guided boat trip or why not go fishing. If you like walking and hiking, there are many lovely tracks in the area. In winter, go for a day trip to the nearby ski slopes.
There are a number of events throughout the year in Carcassonne: May - Jazz week. 19 June to 3 Aug - Festival of the Cité and Festival of the Bastide - opera, dance, theatre and music events. The Cité set ablaze – Fireworks on the night of 14 July. August - Spanish Week. December - the Magic of Christmas.

"Welcoming owner to a comfortable home."
Carina was helpful in setting up the house on really short notice. She even had balloons blown up when we arrive to help celebrate our son's 9th birthday. We found the beds very comfortable and a… More

"Ideal location for exploring Carcassonne"
The best thing about staying at this clean, beautifully decorated property is that it comes with your own Tourist Information Centre in the form of the owner, Carina. Carina has put together a valuable pack of info that really helps you get the most out of a stay in this fascinating part of France.
Even if you are novices to the south of France, traipsing around with 2 little ones as we were, everything is at your fingertips making planning day trips a lot easier.
The maison itself is very spacious, clean, light and really well set out. It has everything you could possibly need for a week or more. Including picnic stuff, games, fans, heaters, buckets and spades for kids.
The courtyard was an absolute delight. We had many nights sitting out sampling the local wines and cheeses, making great use of the 4 burner BBQ.
The local bakery provides fresh croissants and baguettes. And there is also a good general store that sells all the basics including a good little deli with homemade items.
If you want a lovely self contained home in a genuine French village to explore the delights of Carcassonne and beyond, this is a fabulous choice.

"Beautiful house in a lovely French village"
Carina, the owner, was very friendly and helpful. She sent us lots of information via email, and gave us some really good ideas of things to do in the region. There were also plenty of guides in the house, which proved very helpful.
The house was very clean and ideal for us as it has all the amenities for a baby/toddler. The house is on 3 levels, with a bedroom with en-suite bathroom on each floor - again ideal for us as we were spending a week with my husband and in-laws! It has some outside space (great for a toddler) and a bbq that we used every evening.
It's located in a lovely small village with great little shops - we enjoyed our daily trips to the boulangerie, butcher and Proxi! People there were very friendly.
The region is beautiful and there is lots to do - lakes, beaches, vineyards, Carcassonne, beautiful villages etc.
We would definitely recommend the house.

"Beautiful home in a perfect location"
La maison d'anneli is a beautiful and well equipped property situated in a lovely, quaint village and it couldn't be more perfect! I recently spent a blissful two weeks there with family and when we weren't sightseeing and enjoying the sunshine at the local lake we had a perfect time relaxing and enjoying lovely food and wine in the courtyard at the maison.
The interior of the property is really lovely with huge, light and airy bedrooms with en-suites which made our stay even more comfortable. The courtyard lovely and sunny throughout the day and the grapevine, plants and flowers made it even prettier.
The owners, Carina and James, provided so much information on things to do and see in the area and I was really impressed with the efficiency of communication throughout. Would definitely like to return in the future!

"Lovely house in quiet village"
We had a great stay at la maison. The house is nice, perfect for a small family for a week. Very handy to have a dishwasher and washing machine. The bedrooms in the house in particular are lovely. Unfortunately the weather we had wasn't great and by the time the sun came out late in the afternoon the courtyard was in the shade, later in the year it would be lovely to sit out there. The village has several bakeries for the morning croissants and a well stocked local shop. The local pizza shop was pretty handy too. The house is within easy reach of lots of lovely old villages, ruins etc which were nice to visit - and obviously carcassonne!
Thank you for taking the time to review our property. I am pleased your family had a lovely stay. Shame about the weather; this means you just have to come again, as it is glorious when the sun is out.
