The County Galway/County Clare region
Connemara is a wild and rugged expanse of mountain and bogland between Killary Harbour and Kilkieran Bay. From the Twelve Bens mountain range to the lakes of Roundstone Bog and the beaches of the Atlantic coast, the terrain is natural and unspoilt, offering the visitor a wealth of sights, experiences, adventure and activities.
You can enjoy this part of Ireland at any time of year, walking, cycling, painting, fishing or golfing. Clonbur is ideally located to tour Galway and Mayo. Enjoy the spectacular scenery on your way to locations such as:
• Clifden - a colourful and vibrant town with a range of restaurants and attractive beaches.
• Westport - a beautiful historic town near Croagh Patrick mountain. The town offers leisure activities for all the family and interesting shop and cafes.
• Leenane - this village lies at the head of dramatic Killary Fjord - Ireland's only fjord - and was the scene of the film "The Field". The waterfall as Ashleagh is nearby.
• Galway City - Galway city with its bustling university, cultural and commercial centre and festivals (horse racing, arts) is only 30 miles away.
When you return to Clonbur you can forget about the car keys and relax in one of the welcoming pubs.....no need to worry about how to get home!
Clonbur (Irish - An Fhairche) is in part of the Gaeltacht or Irish-speaking region of North Connemara.
There are two good restaurants/pubs in the village, and a very good local shop / pub - so you can eat out and have a drink, and not worry about having to get a taxi home. Mount Gable gifts/ coffee shop is next door, and the hairdresser is across the road.
Lough Corrib and Lough Mask have earned worldwide recognition from anglers and fishermen and Clonbur is centrally located for both lakes. Explore the lakeshores, take a cruise, visit the numerous islands on Lough Corrib - "there is one for every day of the year". If you're feeling adventurous, Petersburgh Activity Centre on Lough Mask offers sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and caving.
You can see Mount Gable from our cottage. It dominates the area around Clonbur and has some of the most splendid views in the region. The starting point for the climb (about 50 mins to the top) is 2km from the village of Clonbur. The views from the top of Mount Gable of Lough Corrib, Lough Mask and little Lough Coolin are breathtaking.
Hillwalkers of all ability will enjoy the trails of the Partry Mountains and Connemara. Or if you just want a stroll, the charming country lanes around Clonbur are at your doorstep. Cyclists can skirt the lakes or tackle the quiet routes through the hills. (Bicycle Hire available in the village)
The village of Cong is 3 miles away. Cong has a great butcher, art gallery, cafe and craft shop, and a choice of welcoming pubs for lunch. Cong is also an excellent centre for fishing, horseriding and bicycle hire. Ashford Castle, a magnificent former residence of the Guinness family, is now a luxury hotel. Its extensive grounds on the shores of Lough Corrib offer a huge variety of walks and paths open to the public and house an equestrian centre, shooting range and falconry. The ruins of an Augustinian abbey stand close to Ashford castle.
The lakeshore beaches of Loughs Corrib and Mask provide opportunities for swimming and boating, as do the islands dotted around the lake. Seaside beaches are within 45 minutes drive south at Carna (Galway Bay) or west near Leenane (Glashilaun). Killary Harbour, which is Ireland's only "fjord", extends ten miles inland and with the mountains rising steeply on either side provides some truly beautiful scenery - you can take a cruise on a glass bottom boat.
For the golfer, there is a range of courses on your doorstep.
