Roundstone is situated in the heart of Connemara on the West coast of Ireland.
From the rugged Twelve Bens mountain range in the north through lake-rich Roundstone Bog to the golden beaches reaching out into the Atlantic Ocean, you'll know you're in Connemara by the light that constantly changes the mood and tone of the landscape.
If you're coming for the walking, swimming, fishing, riding, golfing or just relaxing, Roundstone certainly is the perfect spot.
The Twelve Pins (or Bens) are a group of small mountains that are the dominant feature of the Connemara countryside and are easily accessible. While they are not particularly high, 730 metres is the highest peak, they provide excellent walking and climbing opportunities for the outdoor enthuasiast. They are very safe and you do not have to be an experienced climber to enjoy the wonderful scenery that you will be rewarded with.
The Connemara National Park covers some 2,000 hectares of scenic countryside in the foothills of the Twelve Bens. There is an information centre in the park where Exhibitions, Nature Trails and Audio Visual Shows on the Flora, Fauna and history of Connemara take place.
The whole coastal road from Roundstone to Clifden, which is a busy market town and well worth a visit, offers beautiful scenary and stunning beaches along the way.
Connemara Golf course lies near Ballyconnelly with breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean and white sandy beaches. In this area you can also hire the famous Connemara Ponies for short or long treks.
The Connemara / Roundstone area
The harbour village of Roundstone lies on the western arm of Bertraghboy bay in Connemara, Co. Galway, north-west of Galway city. The village is beautifully set on one of the most spectacular coastal drives in Europe overlooking the Atlantic at the foot of Errisbeg Mountain.
In Roundstone you will find a busy harbour where local fishermen prepare and return with the day’s catch. The town itself boasts a good selection of Pubs and Seafood Restaurants crammed full of locally caught seafood, like in O'Dowd's and Vaughan's. Strolling through the town you will discover some fantastic craft shops and cafés.
It has a traditional craft centre and local activities include Pottery, Jewellery and Instrument making, the village also has a couple of grocery stores, post office, cash machine, petrol pump, internet cafe, library and a health centre.
Bicycle hire and sea fishing tours are available.
The local mountain of Errisbeg is a fantastic climb to make with great views, which starts just a short stroll from the house.
2km from Roundstone, on the road to Ballyconneely, are located two of the finest beaches in Ireland. Gurteen Beach and Dog’s Bay lie back to back on a peninsula into the Atlantic Ocean.
Gurteen Beach is the larger of the two and the closer to Roundstone. The water is crystal clear and it is very safe for swimming and other water based activities. It is naturally protected by the headland which it faces to the south and it is a popular destination for holiday makers in the summertime.
Dog's Bay faces due west. It is famous for its Foraminiferal Sands which are made of millions of microscopic shells. It is a stunning beach with its bright white sands and crystal blue water.

If you are looking for a great place to stay while visiting Roundstone/Connemara, then look no further than The Wooden House. My wife and myself were looking to take our 4-month old daughter off on holiday to Connemara in May this year. We wanted to base ourselves in Roundstone or the surrounding area, and after finding The Wooden House on the internet, we decided to book it for a week's stay. I emailed Betina (the owner) to check availability, and received a prompt reply the next day confirming that my chosen week was available. From then on, the booking process was so easy, and any information that I needed to know about the property (or Roundstone) was cheerfully given by Betina. For us, the house was perfect - well equipped for a week's stay with an excellent kitchen, large dining table, and a comfortable sitting area. The house also has three double bedrooms (one of which is en-suite), a separate bathroom, and also a utility room with washing machine. Additionally, the house has underfloor heating - while we didn't particularly need it in May, it would be great in the chillier months along with the wood burning stove! The house is located just behind the picturesque village of Roundstone - about a ten minute stroll from the harbour and the main street. Even though it is so close to the pubs, restaurants and shops, when you are in the house the feeling of isolation is amazing. We spent many evenings relaxing in the lounge area just gazing out of the window towards the mountains, enjoying the peace and quiet that this part of Ireland affords. Most mornings we awoke to the local dawn chorus of birds, and to find a sheep and her lamb wandering about the grounds outside eating the grass! I am not going to begin to list all the things that we did while we were staying in Roundstone - any person looking to stay in this area will (or should) already know all about the local attractions, of which there are many. This review is of The Wooden House, and anybody who stays here will be well placed to enjoy all that Connemara has to offer. The house is spotless, obviously well looked after, it is perfectly equipped for the visitor, enjoys an excellent location, and in my opinion offers excellent value for money for anyone looking to have a self-catering break in Connemara. As it says in the review title, "we did not want to leave" - it truly was with regret that we packed up our car for the return journey back to Larne, and then home to Scotland. My wife and myself both agreed that we should have booked The Wooden House for two weeks rather than just the one - next time we will. |

Nice house, great kitchen with everything you need, not much going on in the garden but good views up to Errisbeg mountain. But the best thing is the location. 10 minutes walk to Roundstone which has plenty of good pubs and places to eat. The house is literally right at the bottom of Errisbeg mountain which is one of the smaller ones in the area but is an amazing climb because of the view at the top. Nearest beach probably walkable in about half an hour, but we drove it just a few minutes. |
