The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District conjures up images of magnificent mountains and shimmering lakes and that is exactly what visitors find here. In fact the whole county of Cumbria is home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery. This region has been a favourite all year round holiday destination for years and apart from its natural beauty it's also packed with lots of attractions and activities that cater for every kind of holidaymaker, from family holidays to romantic breaks for couples and from those who are looking for lots of activities and sports to those that prefer more gentle country pursuits. The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family. The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base. Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes.

Coniston

Coniston sits at the foot of Coniston Old Man fell close to Grizedale Forest, a wonderful mix of pine forest and broadleaf woodland with walking, biking and exceptional views. Coniston is a small Lakeland village situated alongside Coniston Water, a lake renowned for the Victorian steam yacht 'Gondola' and Brantwood, the former home of the poet John Ruskin. The village has a number of amenities including several shops, cafes and a Tourist Information Centre. You can enjoy a wonderful boat cruise on the lake with special themes around 'Swallows and Amazons' and 'Campbells on Coniston'. Combined this with a walk around the lake, lunch at Bluebird Café by the Lake and an afternoon exploring the surrounding fells to really make the most of this stunning area. Across the lake and accessed via the beautiful village of Hawkshead is Grizedale Forest Park. At around 6,000 acres it's the largest forest in the Lake District and provides an exceptional amount of activities for all the family. Using the walking and biking maps you can explore the forest at your own pace. You'll no doubt come across one of the 60 outdoor sculptures which were developed in the 1970's to provide a unique way of exploring of the forest in a more adventurous way. More adventure can be found at the 'Go Ape' centre where you can swing through the trees with the guide of one of the fully trained members of staff supervising you at all times. Wildlife is in abundance here too with red kites, buzzards and red squirrels all making an appearance
