Enquire nowThe Costa de la Luz region
Costa de La Luz has some 3200+ hours of sunshine annually, and is named the Coast of Light. Seville, the home of Flamenco is only one and a quarter hours away
Jerez is famous for its sherry and you can have or take a day trip to Morocco from Tarifa by jetfoil. Tarifa is home to the European windsurfing championships, with kite surfing also available.
There are 7 golf courses, including 4 championship courses, all within 40 minutes drive. . The prestigious Novo Sancti Petri Golf designed by Seve Ballesteros has 36 holes and stunning views of the sea - the 6th hole leading to the shoreline (2 x 9, 1 x 18) The 9 hole San Andreas Golf, soon to be 18, is within 5 kilometers of the villa. Campano Golf; Vista hermosa Golf; and Santa Maria Golf are all 9 hole. Costa Ballena Golf course designed by Jose Maria Olazabal is 18 holes as is Montecastillo designed by Jack Niclaus.
La Barrosa is a Blue Flag beach with 8 kilometres of beautiful silver sand, on which there is also horse riding: take out a jet ski, or simply stroll to one of the superb fish restaurants. Excellent long beaches strecthing from Conil to Cadiz
There is whale and dolphin watching at Tarifa from day boats..
There is a water park in Puerto Santa Maria about 40 minute drive and a theme park in Seville about 1 hour away
For those wanting some retail therapy, spectacular Seville and duty-free Gibraltar cater for all tastes. There is a fresh produce market on each weekday in Chiclana and also a large weekly market in Conil and Chiclana, which itself has lots of shopping opportunities as does nearby Novo Sancti Petri. There is also plenty of night-life at nearby Barrosa, Cadiz, San Fernando and Jerez. The white hill-top villages of Vejer de la Frontera, Conil, Medina and Arcos de la Frontera are an easy drive through beautiful national parkland.
The ‘Costa de la Luz’ (the Coast of Light) in Southern Andalusia is just becoming acknowledged as one of southern Spain’s finest cultural & landscape destinations.
The Costa de la Luz is one of the most attractive stretches of coast in Andalucia, outside the main tourist centres it is relatively undeveloped and there are wild, virtually untouched areas of beach. The resorts attract mainly Spanish tourists and although it does get busy during the summer, you can always find a fairly quiet spot. The wind can be strong along the coast here, but more than often, it provides a pleasant relief to the heat of the summer.
The sand is finer and a more golden colour than the neighbouring Costa del Sol. The beaches face out to the Atlantic and they are more expansive and probably backed by sand dunes and pine trees.
The Costa de la Luz is more than just beaches though, the capital of Cadiz is a fascinating and beautiful city and the ‘pueblos blancos’ (white towns) through which you will ride, and in which you will rest, exude ancient charm. Their whitewashed, medieval walls and fine monuments of Islamic & Christian heritage will give you a unique glimpse of how life has been lived here for centuries.
Blue seas, natural parks, savory sherry, exotic Moorish culture and the scumptious seafood together make up the magic that is the "Coast of Light".
The Conil de la Frontera / Roche Viejo area
Roche Viejo is a rural area close to the beach, surrounded mainly by farmland and 3,5 km from the town Conil de la frontera with its cobbled streets and traditional Spanish feel. Although it's a quiet area, there are some restaurants within a 5 minute drive and a small supermarket within a 5 minute walk.
Conil and Roche beaches regulary enjoy good surf, even on relatively calm days when the flags on the beach are green, there is still fun to be had on the waves. There are many tapas bars and restaurants to sample the delicous Spanish cuisine and we are in a very prestigious area where the Spanish themselves like to holiday.

We rented this villa knowing the Conil area but not Rocha Viejo where the villa is located. It turned out to be a good choice being about midway between Conil and Sancti Pecti, both nice coastal towns. The villa is not particularly near the sea but stands fairly alone, just the neighbouring villa which is home to a British couple who keep an eye on it for the owners. The villa is spacious and has a nice lounge and kitchen despite being fairly spartan on the furnishings - more than adequate but nothing special. There is a very nice pool not really overlooked as the property is bounded by a high hedge. The car (you will need one) can be parked of the road and the gates shut on the world. There are shops and restaurants with a reasonable walk, a much greater choice only a few miles in either direction, or just a little further afield at Vejer, (the Moroccan in the town square is to die for) or the cooking facilities are good enough to eat in. There is plenty of literature and advice on what to see, maps and where to eat provided in the villa but just remember not everyone may have the same tastes as you. One bad point is that the villa can take a bit of finding in the dark although the directions are excellent so try to arrive in daylight - follow the directions to the letter and you will find it easily enough. The villa is very handy for jumping onto the main N34 road from Tarifa up to Cadiz and this puts Jerez within 20 minutes and Cadiz about 30 minutes. However be warned one of the attractions of this area is that it is still quite Spanish, is a popular resort for the Spanish, and English is not as widely spoken as it is in other areas. Conil is a very Spanish town Sancti Pecti a little more of a resort with a great and very clean beach, plenty of golf and other activities, these are about 4 miles either side of the villa. |
