The North West Ireland / County Mayo region
County Mayo forms the north-west shoulder of the province of Connacht, and is situated in the heart of Ireland's famous 'Western World'. Stretching from Lough Corrib and Killary Harbour in the south to the barony of Eris and Killala Bay in the north, this large county combines a magical mixture of natural amenities and leisure facilities.
There are megalithic tombs, excellent fishing waters, exciting hiking trails and great golf courses - including the championship course at Westport in west Mayo.
Westport is a charming town, with lively traditional pubs and plenty of Irish music. It lies at the mouth of Clew Bay, where you'll find Achill Island - the largest island off the Irish coast, and probably the most beautiful, with lovely mountains, moors and beaches.
Back on the mainland, Croagh Patrick , the pyramidal mountain, is where Saint Patrick is said to have performed his snake-banishing act. Mayo's other famous religious site is Knock, which is visited by hordes of pilgrims every year. The people of Mayo are renowned for their hospitality and friendliness.
The Cong Village / Killimor area
About 2 miles from the historic village of Cong for shops and restaurants and with the famous Ashford Castle nearby. Local attractions include 18-hole golf course at Ballinrobe (6 miles). Boats and engines are available for hire on Lough Corrib and Mask. Spectacular mountain scenery and varied coastline and an ideal base for touring, walking or climbing.
