About this location
The Poitou-Charentes region
Places of Interest in the Region
About 1½ hours' drive away is Futuroscope in Poitiers - the famous "moving image" theme park. There is also the strip cartoon (bande déssiné) museum in Angoulême and the cognac distilleries in Cognac
About 1 hour's drive is Limoges, famous for its porcelain and enamels. It also has a large botanical garden, an aquarium and an attractive mediaeval quarter.
Less than 1 hour away is Rochechouart: centre of "The Meteorite Country". About 214 million years ago a huge meteorite devastated the whole region. There is an exhibition in the town centre near the church with its twisted spire. There is also an impressive château which houses the sub-prefecture and a modern art exhibition. Nearby, is Chassenon, the site of a Gallo-Roman thermal spa which is the subject of continuing archaeological excavation. There is already a lot to see - hypocausts, two huge swimming pools, vaulted passageways, furnaces and so on. Like all the villages in the Meteorite Country, it is built with the stones created by the impact (breccia). There are many chateaux in the area.
Fifteen minutes away is Brigueuil, where you can still see much of the fortified mediaeval village. On the road to St. Junien from Brigueuil, is a "brocante" where you can visit a toy museum.
Within a half-hour drive is Confolens, a very pretty mediaeval town straddling the river Vienne. It plays host each year in August to an international festival of folk dance and music. St. Junien is another old town close by. It has some very interesting buildings, including an 11th century church named after the saint. St. Junien also has a fine golf course.
There are cafés and restaurants in many of the small towns where one can eat well at reasonable prices. A list of some of these is available at the house.
The area is very rural; a peaceful and secluded corner of La France Profonde. The countryside is rolling and wooded, studded with many small lakes and ponds (étangs), stone built villages and farmsteads. Activities include horse riding, bird watching and rambling (the local ramblers' association has recently reopened and signposted many of the old communal pathways - there is a list of these at the house). There is a swimming lake, Etagnac, about 15 minutes drive away, and a lake-based leisure complex at the Barrage Lavaud, about ½ an hour away.
Verina, the property, is in the commune of Lesterps, a village in the department of the Charente, in the region of France known as Poitou-Charente.

"August at verina"
The house is in a lovely location. It is very quiet and peaceful but only a short drive to the shops. We really enjoyed the large pool. The owners family were very friendly and helpful, but not obtrusive at all. A very relaxing and enjoyable holiday. We would go back.

"Beautiful and peaceful holiday location"
We were made most welcome at Verina. This is a beautifully secluded ancient farm cottage, off the beaten track and with beautiful rural vistas. It was quite amazing to be able to sunbathe and barbecu… More
