The Costa Calida/Murcia region
The Costa Calida is situated in the south east corner of the iberian peninsula. To the north lies the Costa Blanca and to the south lies Almeria. It has a total of 250km of coastline and 'Costa Calida' translated means 'Hot Coast'. It has at least 315 days of sunshine per year and daytime temperatures range from 18-40Cin the summer season to 10-22C in the winter season.
ALHAMA DE MURCIA Alhama of Murcia is an important historical town which is situated on the foothills of the beautiful mountainous Sierra Espuna regional park surrounded by history. The Arabs built the castle on the hill to defend it from the Christians and gave it the name Alhamman. Today Alhama is a busy town with a bustling street market. The views are spectacular along the journey where you will find a few small bars and restaurants serving quality food at a reasonable price.
MAZARRON/CAMPOSOL AREA Bathed in history and with numerous beautiful beaches, hidden coves, mountains and varied countryside, friendly people and the general environment make Mazarron and the Costa Colida region a wonderful place to visit for a carefree and relaxing holiday with an abundance of sporting activities for those who wish to be active. This area is mainly agricultural and produces olives, almonds, lettuce and more tomatoes than anywhere else in Spain. Most of the tomatoes supplied to the UK supermarkets are grown in this locality.
SURROUNDING AREA
CAMPOSOL, approximately 14km away is a superb inland village, Camposol literally means 'Country side in the sun' has excellent facilities which include a dentist, a bank, hypermarket and smaller supermarket shops, several bars, restaurants with a choice of Chinese, Indian, Italian, Spanish and English dining. Follow the paths, on bicycle or on horse back through ever changing scenery. If you like adventure sports and being close to nature, you are in the right place.
PUERTO MAZARRON situated approximately 31km away has superb sandy beaches, secluded coves and a marina. There are many excellent restaurants and bars but no chip shops or fast food takeaways. This is your original Spain! The paseo which goes as far as El Alamillo is a lovely way to stroll and pass away a warm balmy evening and burn off a few calories. It is one of the most important tourist centres for marine and sub-aqua activities in Spain. Sailing and diving can be undertaken at any time of year and clear waters with rich flora and fauna offer the diving enthusiasts some highly interesting underwater scenery.
SIERRA ESPUNA situated to the north of Mazarron through Totana or Alhama is where you will find this beautiful national park. The views are spectacular and along the journey you will find a few small bars and restaurants serving good quality food at a reasonable price. There are a number of walks signposted and if you are lucky you will see wild boar and red squirrels.
LORCA is a nearby beautiful town with a castle on the hill which has narrated tours in English. It also has a fantastic fiesta every year at Easter time with marvellous costumes and floats. People travel from all over Spain for this fantastic parade. You can wander round the many little cobbled streets and admire the old buildings and architecture or just sit outside one of the many cafes and restaurants enjoying tapas, a cold beer or a café's con leche and just watch the people.
MURCIA is the provincial capital of the region which is described as one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the country. It has retained it's Moorish heritage yet has fashionable boutiques, upmarket department stores and fine local cuisine. There are impressive churches in the city including the baroque Cathedral which is definitely well worth visiting together with the casino built in the 19th century which has an amazing palatial interior.
CARTAGENA is an ancient Roman city, the old part of which is quite spectacular. It has a beautiful, lively port with lots of restaurants from where you can go on one of the many boat trips conducted regularly from here. There is a naval and archaeological museum showcasing the rich history of the area. Narrated bus tours offer an insight into the cities fascinating past.
AGUILAS is a modern well planned town located on a site whose history dates back thousands of years to the Greek, Roman and Moor occupation. It has a beautiful harbour where the views from the castle of San Juan are truly impressive. It's walkways along the sea and the serenity of its bays of levanter and poniente truly fit the bill. Aguilas also boasts one of the most beautiful 'plaza's' in southern Spain called 'Glorieta de la Espana'. It boasts a wonderful collection of rare plants and shrubs all growing in the shade of tall palms and various other trees. In the centre is the fountain known locally as 'Pava de la Balsa' (Turkey in the pool!). The Plaza is surrounded by a variety of buildings most of which have beautiful early 19th century facades, perhaps the most notable being the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) which is Neomudejar style. This is the perfect setting to sit at one of the cafe's or restaurants and spend many a pleasurable hour people watching.
