The Murcia region

Well known for hot sunny summers and warm clear winters, Murcia’s 300+ days of sunshine a year, make it a great holiday destination. With plains, valleys, mountains and coast, it’s an area of contrasts ideal for nature lovers and those who enjoy life outside as well as those looking for ‘sun and sand’.
The climate is ideal for outdoor activities and Murcia has plenty of these to offer, from golf to water sports and hiking to horse riding. Add to that vineyards, forests, castles, towers, archaeological and cultural sites, thermal springs and some lively cities and there’s plenty to satisfy a wide range of tastes. A good network of fast new roads make it easy to get around in the region.
Murcia’s 170km coastline, the Costa Calida (or ‘Warm Coast’) is a mixture of beaches with sparkling white sand and dashing waves and remote coves with peaceful waters. The Mar Menor (‘Small Sea’) a huge coastal lagoon of clear warm waters is excellent for children as its beaches shelve very gently. Other highlights include the beautiful beaches and walking trails of the Calblanque Park nature reserve and the lovely fishing village of Cabo de Palos.
Murcia is 'the market garden of Spain' and as such you’ll find plenty of fantastic local foods and wine. Try the fabulous seafood straight from the quayside, a perfect paella or perhaps a Caldero fish stew (immortalised by Ernest Hemingway in ‘The Old Man and The Sea’). Other specialities include the mountain lamb, dried sausage, goats’ cheese, grilled vegetables, fresh market produce, cakes and wine. The local wine has its own Designation of Origin and if drinking it is not enough you can visit the vineyards and bodegas of the Jumilla and Bullas areas.
The Condado de Alhama area
Murcia is home to some of the best golf courses in Europe and the recently opened Jack Nicklaus ‘signature’ 18 hole championship course at Condado de Alhama is one of the most prestigious of them. This attractive and challenging par 72 course is the highlight of the Polaris World “Nicklaus Golf Trail” of 6 Jack Nicklaus designed courses in a 25km radius (the highest concentration of Jack Nicklaus golf courses in the world). Golfers might also like to try the course at the nearby Hacienda del Alamo resort. Fairways Property Services who look after the villa for me can arrange discounted green fees on all these courses.
The resort also has numerous swimming pools, 6 paddle tennis courts, 2 tennis courts, 3 squash courts, a basketball court, football pitches, a gym and children’s play areas. Bicycles can be hired on site.
Other facilities on the resort include a well stocked supermarket selling local and international brands, a golf shop, a pub/bar and restaurants offering a wide range of dishes. See:
http://www.condadodealhama.eu/eng_index.php
The Condado Club at the sports centre has an indoor games area for children and arranges regular activities and events.
The nearest beaches to Condado de Alhama at Mazarrón (about 20 minutes away) are some of the best in Spain. Bolneuvo, just south of Mazarrón, is famous for its amazing rock formations and the marina at Puerto Mazarrón has some excellent bars and restaurants.
The Sierra Espuña National Park (10 minutes away) is a thickly wooded mountain range that contains the region’s highest peaks and wildlife such as boars, white squirrels and rare butterflies. It is an area of unspoilt natural beauty great for walking, cycling, having a picnic or just taking in the spectacular views.
Murcia City and Cartagena are also well worth visiting.
Bustling with life, palm trees and fountains, Murcia City is known as the ‘Baroque capital of Spain’ due to its wealth of fine buildings; the most impressive being around Plaza Cardenal Belluga which is dominated by the Cathedral of Santa Maria. Visitors will also find several modern shopping centres and old historic narrow streets full of traditional tapas bars and restaurants. In the summer months there are often open air concerts and other entertainment.
An ancient port that has recently been rejuvenated, Cartagena is a captivating place – highlights include exploring hidden Roman gems such as the amphitheatre, relaxing by the marina and taking a harbour cruise.
Diving, cave diving, sailing, surfing, windsurfing, water skiing, kayaking, paragliding, walking, climbing, cycling, karting, horse riding, quad biking are all possible in the local area. A water park and zoo are a short drive away.

Our holiday at Villa Jana was just wonderful. The warmth and beauty of the surrounding countryside, the availability of amenities on site, the seclussion and quietness all made the holiday an excellent experience. We found the access directions easy to follow, and the greeting friendly and very informative. Although we had not visited the area before, we found that there was plenty to see, particularly along the coast. We enjoyed the golf facility, although somewhat expensive, and made good use of the numerous swimming pools, always finding one that met our desire for a peaceful sunny spot. We particularly liked the local visiting market offering local produce and items of interest. On the down side, I'm not sure how quiet it would be had the complex been even half full! There are a lot of villas/appartments unoccupied - a huge site for the number of amenities. |

We visited Villa Jana in the first week of October with friends. The weather was really good for the month of October and the resort was quiet as it was out of season. On arrival (which was around very late evening) we were met by Andy who had prepared a great welcome pack of food and drink for us which was extremely welcome after the flight and car journey. The villa itself is well equipped with everything you could wish for to make your stay pleasant and hassle free from a LCD TV to a washing machine you will not have to worry about a thing. Without a shadow of a doubt you will need a car to get around as the resort is quite some way from the nearest local supermarket. There is a supermarket on sites as well as a bar but the prices tend to be a little more expensive than those in the local supermarket in Camposol B which is some 10 minute drive away. There was four of us sharing the villa for the week and we had no issues with space or sharing of the Villas facilities. On site there are a number of swimming pools as well as playing areas for young children (3 – 6) , a supermarket (already mentioned) a bar and a pro shop for the golfers. There is also a restaurant but this was closed for the duration of our stay which meant either eat in or get in the car and drive to a local eatery. Overall this was a great holiday, relaxing, great company, excellent facilities and would have no problem recommending this Villa to future holiday goers. |

Travelled from Bristol to Alicante and took a hire car to the resort which takes around 1 hour 20 mins, arrived at just before midnight. Was met by a representitive from the Villa company who gave us the brief on the accomadation and we tucked into our welcome pack which was provided for our arrival as agreed in advance. The Villa has it all for a very comfortable stay and is finished to a highest standard, 2 bathrooms and bedrooms, air con, cable TV with english channels and a great kitchen which you can cook a comprehensive meal for 4 in which we did on a couple of occasions. Pool is just 30 metres away and the nearest beach 20 mins drive. The resort is also surrounded on 3 sides by mountains which gives you a epic view of the sunset from he sun terrace on the roof. Also good safe running routes round the resorts if you like to stretch your legs and has security on the gated entrance 24/7. The resort was very quiet as out of season as were the beaches which suited us but the weather was fabulous for our whole stay. Hire car is essential and got 8 days for £18 per day!! Supermarket is a bit pricy but the larger one in Camposol is much better and has great selection of sea food and meat its also on the way back from the beach! resturant on site was closed due to the time of year which was a little disappointing but the bar is great. Overal we loved it and will go back again next year, highly recommended. |
