About the home

A modern villa Finca Sonora has two bedrooms, one double and one twin and can sleep 4 comfortably, and a sofa bed in the open plan living room could take a fifth person. There is a shared bathroom with a shower, sink and WC.

The house is surrounded by terraces and even has a large one on the roof. The pool is next to the house, private and secluded and has a series of steps running down into it that provide a great spot to sit. There are good views up and down the little valley in which the villa sits.

The Andalucia / Malaga Province region

The area around Finca Sonora is known as Axarquia - an ancient area in southern Spain where the beaches stay open all year long and orange trees line the streets. Known for the best climate in Europe, Axarquia has sub-tropical temperatures similar to southern California. Lapped by the Mediterranean waters of the Costa del Sol and sheltered by magnificent mountain ranges, Axarquia lies within the Malaga Province of Andalucia.

Further away are the fabulous cities of Granada, Cordoba, Sevilla, Jerez, Cadiz and Malaga – all excellent places to visit, and if you only want to see one then head to Granada to visit the Alhambra, it is under two hours drive and you can make it a day trip; you can book tickets for the Alhambra on the web, and they are for timed entries, at the busy times of year this is well worth it.

The Competa area

Nearby the local town of Competa sits nestled in the mountains, it is a well known white village with lovely squares and winding streets. You can walk there in under 30 minutes (although the start and end of the walk have steep sections) or drive in less than 10. There are good cafes and bars, restaurants, shops and markets around the town, including a pharmacy, and a hotel.

The area is well known for its delicious sweet wine (vino dulce - from the muscat grape) and many head for the bars after a morning shop to sample a little tapas of ham and a glass or two of the local wine while watching the world go by. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings an outdoor market transforms the lower car park square offering a sample of local activity and produce.

Around Competa there are fabulous walks through the countryside (in the national park in the mountains right next door), riding is available, and there are lots of unknown small white villages to explore.

The seaside town of Torrox Costa is 25 minutes drive away, where a long board-walk runs the length of the beach, you can rent beds or simply lie on the beach, and there are lots of restaurants bars and shops nearby. This is a busy family holiday destination and great fun for a beach day out. There is also a fun market to browse through.

Further east along the coast, 15 minutes away from Torrox Costa, is the town of Nerja, (www.andalucia.com/nerja/home.htm) larger than Torrox Costa, with several good quality golf courses and a lively night life as well as a very large cave system that has its own theatre, cave paintings over 20,000 years old and which offers welcome relief from the summer heat - well worth a visit.

Finca Sonora is about an hours’ drive from Malaga airport and just under two hours from Granada airport; it is easy to get to. Car hire is straightforward from either airport.
www.car-jet.co.uk is a useful place to start for car hire.

Ryanair, http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/ , flies to Granada, and, although a slightly longer drive is a much smaller airport and gives you the opportunity to visit the Alhambra on the way out or back.

Easyjet, http://www.easyjet.co.uk/ , flies to Malaga, and so do many other airlines, try British Airways, Iberia, Monarch, and Expedia can help finding last minute bargains.

“Perfect for a quiet escape” Finca Sonora is just off the main road from Torrox to Competa but its position in a small valley provides seclusion and a beautiful situation of peace and tranquility. For us the main attractions of this finca were its outdoor space. There are different areas to suit most for sun bathing, outdoor eating or general relaxation. The pool is a very welcome facility for cooling off, though its size doesn't encourage vigorous exercise. Inside the finca is well laid out and is reasonably appointed. Any review must also mention the negative points and on the whole these are directed to the inside of the property. Although the booking information mentions there is no television, its absence or more particularly the lack of any electronic entertainment is noticeable. For two adults this is not a major problem but for anyone coming with children it may cause a problem. The cooking facilities are fine and there are sufficient utensils to prepare meals. The main bugbears were the double bed was not particularly comfortable, but we guess that could be an entirely personal point and the pillows had no substance to them. Even at the end of august the weather was hot and a portable air conditioning unit would have been more useful than two fans. It has to be said the property could do with a bit of a facelift and the unmade track to the property may give unconfident drivers difficulties. Finally, there is very little mobile signal at the finca, great if you want to escape work, family and friends. However, in summary, this a great place and we are certainly booking again for next year. We will be letting the owners know of a few more things which will go to make this holiday even better value for money. Competa is a few kilometers on and is a lovely town.
