Villa | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 5
In our opinion a stay in this villa was the perfect holiday rental - so we bought it. The perfect romantic hideaway, 15 minutes from the picturesque, historic white village of Competa, yet only 20 minutes drive to the coastal resorts of Torrox and Nerja, it's the ideal location for a holiday all year round. With stunning views over the valley and down to the coast, the house is in a peaceful and private, but not isolated location.
Surrounded by over an acre of delightfully planted gardens full of fruit trees, there is a sun terrace with an 8m x 4m private pool and barbecue. The flower decked patio is the perfect place for alfresco dining or just 'listen to the quiet' and enjoy the spectacular scenery. While away the afternoon watching the eagles and golden oriel fly by, take a cooling dip in the pool and finish off the day with a glass of Competa wine on the terrace.
The entrance leads you to a spacious lounge with wood burning stove then pass through an archway to the dining room and fully equipped kitchen. The villa, which is built in the traditional Andalusian style with beamed ceilings and tiled floors, has 3 bedrooms and one bathroom all on one level, it is tastefully furnished in a rustic, antique style and is fully equipped. Very Private, Idyllic Location. 20 Minutes From The Coast. The Perfect Romantic Hideaway.

The Andalucia region
AXARQUIA, an Arab word meaning 'The East'- is an ancient area, east of Malaga City, in Andalucia where the beaches stay open all year and orange trees line the streets. Lapped by the Mediterranean waters of the Costa del Sol and sheltered by magnificent mountain ranges. Until around a decade ago the Axarquía region was little known. Then, northern European expatriates discovered the pretty hilltop village of Cómpeta, started buying up some of the run-down 'fincas' and farmhouses in the area and putting it on the map.
Today, rural tourism comprises a large part of the local economy. However, the area is still breathtakingly beautiful and has not been spoilt by the interest and influx of foreigners. The main attractions are the area's dramatic hill and mountain scenery, its unspoilt, white washed villages and the strong sweet wine that is made from sun dried grapes. Because of the region's sub-tropical climate, this is also a region where some of the more tropical fruits, such as mango and kiwi are grown.
SIERRAS OF TEJEDA, ALMIJARA AND ALMARA NATURAL PARK. Designated a natural park in 1999, this large and rugged mountainous region of 40,663ha stretches across the provincial border of Granada and Malaga.
It is famous for its attractive villages dating from Moorish times. It is also superb hiking country and its numerous steep mountainsides make it ideal for climbers. Its highest peak is La Maroma, at 2,080m.
Nearly all the villages that dot the olive, almond and vine planted hillsides are of Muslim origin with narrow, windy streets. La Axarquía joined the 1569 Morisco rebellion and afterwards its inhabitants were replaced with Christians from farther north.
Signposted routes with names like Ruta del Vino link groups of villages in one-day drives along the snaking mountain roads. The highest mountains in the area stretch east from the Boquete de Zafarraya. In Cómpeta there is a "Museo de Vino" where you can taste the locally made wine and buy locally made ceramics. It also has several good restaurants serving traditional local dishes. A scenic road winds west through the villages of Salares, Sedella and Canillas de Aceituna eventually linking up with the A 335 north of Velez Malaga which links up with the new highway to Malaga and beyond.
The village of Comares in one of the highest in Andalucía it can be spied for miles around, rising high above the surrounding countryside. Frigiliana is said by many to be one of the prettiest in Andalucia.
