The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
The village of Competa is set at the foot of the Sierra Almijara, the snow capped range of mountains between Malaga & Granada, that stretch down to the warm Mediterranean. Competa, dating back to the Moors, and whose style is reflected in its winding streets and whitewashed houses, has many excellent restaurants and bars. The local inhabitants are content to sit in the central square, drink coffee and wish the stranger, Buenos dias! The village is six hundred and fifty metres above sea level and from its flower bedecked streets and plazas there are spectacular views of sea, countryside and mountains. It is still an active and hard working agricultural town which makes an important contribution to the industry of the province with abundant crops of olives, almonds, grapes, raisins, figs and, above all, its famous wine, Vino de Cómpeta, which is renowned worldwide. In recent years a variety of tropical fruit has been successfully cultivated here. Mango, chirimoya and avocado plantations thrive on the sheltered slopes around Cómpeta. The Sierras lie to the north, snow capped in winter, the wide blue expanse of the Mediterranean lies to the south. If an earthly paradise could exist the Axarquia would have to be its name.
Competa / El Cerro area
The list is endless- during your stay you may be tempted to go scuba diving, horse riding, sailing, walking, wine tasting and even skiing between the months of December and May. Two quality golf courses are also nearby. In addition, nightlife is well catered for with a number of restaurants in nearby Competa, (a little to far to walk if you over indulge in the local vino, but only 5min by local taxi) For those wanting to dance the night away Torrox Costa, Nerja and Torre del Mar offer a variety of nightclubs and bars.
