The Lombardy / Lake Como Area
The villages of Bellagio (a must on any trip to Lake Como), Brunate, Cernobbio, Como, Moltrasio and Torno are all easily accessible from Blevio, whether by foot, boat (the most impressive way to travel) or other public transport.
You should also try to make time for other popular tourist towns such as Menaggio, and Varenna, as well as Gravedona and Domaso in the north and Bellano, Lenno, and Argegno on the Lake's promontory are also worth seeing, if only for a couple of hours.
Other places to think about including in your itinerary are:
The gardens of Villa Melzi Isola Comacina Villa Carlotta (a beautiful 17th-century lakeside Villa) Villa Monastero (accessible from Varenna, notable for its amazing gardens) Villa del Balbianello (accessible from Lenno, and a 20-minute walk from there, but well worth it. James Bond recovered here in Casino Royale) Laglio (if you are interested in seeing at least the high walls that keep the masses from descending on George Clooney's villa) Villa D'Este (the Lake's most famous and expensive hotel; a good place for a drink)
Those interested in more active pursuits will not be disappointed, as Lake Como caters for activities including mountain-biking, horseback riding kayaking, and paragliding. Again, let us know what you are interested in and we will point you in the right direction.
Wikitravel is a good quick reference for Lake Como. Try www.wikitravel.org/en/Como or http://wikitravel.org/en/Lake_Como. Also have a look at the more discerning advice and reviews provided by Frommer's: http://www.frommers.com/destinations/lakecomo/0740010029.html. The best map available for Como is the Kompass Map 0091. This is a German-printed map which includes details of walking and cycling trails, terrain, villages, churches, mountain refuges and other points of interest. You can buy it here: http://www.mapsworldwide.com/sku_13928.htm.
Como / Blevio area
Blevio is located about 40 km north of Milan and about 2 km north-east of Como. It has a population of around 1,250 inhabitants and is almost six square kilometres in size. Blevio ranges from 200m above sea level to a highest point of 1,140 metres above sea level.
Blevio is the modern-day conglomeration of seven historical villages (Capovico, Cazzanore, Girola, Maggianico, Mezzovico, Sopravilla and Sorto), with Casa Blevio located in Sopravilla ("above the village").
We would recommend hiring a car or motorbike for those looking to explore the further reaches of the Lake and the Lombardy region and it would certainly make it easier to get to the property when you first arrive, but this is not necessary. It is possible instead to rely on a combination of walking and public transport (buses and boats), as well as taxis, to get around.
From Blevio, it is possible to walk to Torno in around 25 minutes. From Torno, you can catch a boat to these destinations. From Blevio, you can also enjoy some picturesque walks, including the trip to Brunate, from where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Lake. Those feeling less fit can take the funicolare (mountain train) which departs from Como centre. From Brunate, you can even continue to hike over to the Volta Lighthouse for an even better view. There are countless possibilities for enthusiastic hikers, walkers and cyclists. We are happy to provide you with ideas for your stay if you get in contact with us.
HOW TO GET AROUND
The boats and 'aliscafi' of the Navigazione Lago di Como connect the town with most of the villages on the shores of the lake. From Blevio, you will need to walk (25-30 minutes), drive or take the bus to Torno to catch a boat.
The boats are slower and better for sightseeing, while the aliscafi are faster and make less stops. Special tourist cruises are also available, but the point-to-point commuter services are perfect for visiting the towns along the lake.
A taxi service is provided by the Comune di Como, local phone numbers are +390312772, +39031261515 or +39031260259.
WHERE TO EAT IN BLEVIO
Blevio has one restaurant: the ristorante da Antonio e Rosa at 15a, Via Caronti.

Teatro Sociale: Via Comacini 8 (Tel. +39031264042). Opposite the duomo (cathedral). Traditional Italian food, offering very reasonably fixed-price menus (although the New York Times recommends not ordering fish, as it is frozen).
Stilo: Via Lungo Lario Trento 11 (Tel. +39031261238). Above one of Como's best Gelaterie (see below). Traditional Italian food.
GELATERIE
There are two good gelaterie in Como, both on Piazza Cavour. One is on the right-hand side of the piazza as you look at the lake, not far from the intersection with Via Bianchi Giovin. The other is situated lakeside between Piazza Cavour and Via Cairoli.
How to get there
Casa Blevio is located in the tranquil village of Blevio, which is part of the Province of Como in the Italian region of Lombardy.
From Como, Blevio is best reached by car (a four-minute journey), taxi or bus (from the main bus station in Como).
We would recommend that you consider hiring a car during your time in Blevio, as Casa Blevio is accessible from the main lakeside motorway via a steep, winding road. You can park on the street near the property without charge.
You can also rely on public transport during your stay (the main bus-stop is just a few minutes' walk from Casa Blevio), or the more expensive option of taxis is always available.
HOW TO GET TO COMO
By plane: The nearest airports to Como are: Milan Malpensa (the nearest), Milan Linate, and Bergamo's Orio al Serio. British airways, Alitalia and Easyjet fly to Milan Malpensa and Linate airports. Ryanair flies to Orio al Serio.
From Milan Malpensa: By car: a 40-60 minute drive. Take the A336 to the A8, following directions for Milan before taking the A9 towards Como and Switzerland. Exit at Como.
By public transport: Take the Malpensa Express train straight from the airport to Saronno and change for Como.
Follow the signs for the Malpena Express, which is located in Terminal 1. You need the train that stops in Saronno (this should be the first stop, but they will announce it). At Saronno, you should get out, and then change onto a train for Como. If you need to ask anyone, the easiest way is to just say: "per Saronno?" and "per Como", which is like saying "how do I get to ...?"
The Malpensa Express train timetable is here:
http://www.malpensaexpress.it/en/index.php
(the trains that stop at Saronno leave at 53 minutes past every hour). This journey will only take 9 minutes.
The trains from Saronno to Como run every 30-60 minutes. Your stop will be "Como Lago", which is the last stop. There should be a couple of other stops in Como ("Como Camerlata", "Como Borghi") before, but just stay on the train until the end of the line. The journey should take 40 minutes. The timetable for Saronno-Como is here:
http://www.lenord.it/en/index.php
To come back, trains depart "Como Lago" station. You get out at Saronno after 40 minutes. Trains leave Saronno for Malpensa at 16 and 46 minutes past the hour, and take you to Malpensa Terminal 1.
From the station, you can to the centre of Como.
Alternatively there is a coach service that departs three times daily from Terminals 1 and 2, or you can negotiate with private coach companies outside the airport.
From Milan Linate
By car: a 1 hour drive. Take the A1 towards Monza, then the A4 (West), then join the A9 (North) towards Switzerland and Como
By public transport: There is a bus service to Milan from the aiport. The bus arrives at San Babila tube station. From there you can go to either Stazione Centrale or Stazione Cadorna by tube and then take a train for Como. A taxi from the airport to Milan centre costs Euro12-18.
From Bergamo Orio al Serio
By car: A 1-1.5 hour drive. There is a toll road which takes you to Como from Bergamo.
By public transport: A regular coach service departs for Milan, where you can take a train to Como.
By train
Trains from Milan Stazione Centrale will arrive at San Giovanni, which is a few minutes' walk from the city centre. trains departing from Stazione Cadorna arrive at Como Lago, which is also very close to the city centre.
By taxi
A much more expensive option, you can either ask us to arrange for a taxi to take you to Como from the airport, or you can hire one when you arrive at the airport.

Further details indoors: Casa Blevio is a simple, self-catered apartment that sleeps up to four people and is spread over two levels. The property is newly refurbished and benefits from a modern kitchen and bathroom, as well as a newly-laid wooden laminate flooring.
Further details outdoors: The apartment benefits from a outdoor dining terrace which overlooks Lake Como, but the key attraction is the large, steeped garden above the top floor of the apartment that offers a stunning panorama of the Lake. Villa D'Este, the famous luxury hotel, and the Versace villa, are clearly visible on the other side of the Lake from the garden.
Please note that the property is accessed by a fairly steep staircase, a feature typical of the houses of the region as they are built into the surrounding mountains. This may make the property unsuitable for very young children and the elderly. However, we can promise those that do use the staircase that the view available at the top is well worth the effort!
