The Brittany / Finistere region

Finistère is the most westerly of the departments of Brittany, known for its long sandy beaches and small fishing villages. The main town is Brest, a major naval port, and the towns of Morlaix, Quimper and Carhaix each have their own characters and attractions.
Breton pancakes (sweet crêpes or savoury galettes) are probably the best known traditional local food, and cider is produced throughout Finistère and can easily be bought direct from the producer.
The rolling countryside criss-crossed by rivers, canals and lakes is a paradise for walkers, horse-riders, cyclists, water sports enthusiasts, fishermen, bird watchers, and naturalists alike. Brittany boasts a long and proud tradition, dating from pre-historic times with many sites to visit, including the famous standing stones at Carnac, an enjoyable day's outing from the gîte.
Families are also well catered for, and Finistère has a range of attractions and sporting activities for all ages, whether you want to practice your skills, or learn something new.
Commana is located centrally in Finistère, making it a great choice of base to visit the area.
The Commana area
Commana is a traditional quaint village with bars, restaurants, cafés and shops. The village is set in the heart of a regional park and is an ideal area for walkers to explore, with many well-marked trails. For lovers of history, Commana has prehistoric sites, museums, including an old mill, and the tallest church in Brittany.
The whole family will love the beautiful nearby Lac du Drennec, situated in the Monts d'Arrée, where you can swim from the sandy beaches, fish, canoe, walk or cycle. The towns of Morlaix and Landerneau are a must, both date from medieval times, and have ports and markets which are well worth visiting.
The historic towns of Landerneau and Morlaix are 15 minutes drive away, as is Landivisiau which has a fantastic market on Wednesdays. Further afield the north and west Brittany coasts with their coves and long sandy beaches are within easy reach, as is the local capital Brest, with opportunities for more shopping, or visiting its aquarium - Oceanopolis, and renowned botanical gardens. Les 3 Curés, a theme park just outside Brest, will delight young and old, and lovers of football should also know that Brest has recently been promoted to the top division of French football.
Throughout the year there are many folk and live music and dance festivals. Details can be supplied on request.

The trip was easy to plan in all respects. Kerhuella is a very comfortable, attractive and thoughtfully designed cottage, homely yet fully equipped. It is located in a quiet, unspoilt village, with lovely views of the nearby hills. Commana has a few shops, including a baker's and a pharmacy. The nearest supermarket is a few kilometres away. I would suggest staying for at least a week to make the most of this stunning area. |

This cottage was perfect for us. We wanted a quiet place in a beautiful part of Brittany. It was very clean, comfortable, and upgraded. We relaxed, walked around town, and used it as a home base for driving the surrounding beautiful countryside and beaches. Everything we needed for our stay was provided and we ate several meals there, both at the dining table and outside on the patio. I highly recommend this cottage. |
