The West Country region
North Devon is home to some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK. There are long sandy beach areas, dramatic cliff edges into the sea, stunning walking along coastal paths or within the moorland countryside. On the edge of Exmoor and with a drive to Dartmoor you have more woodland paths, rivers to amble or picnic by, bridle ways for horseriding. North Devon is the place for surfing at Croyde, and Woolacombe has a long stretch of glorious sand for just sitting on or building that creation in the sand. Woolacombe beach has full family based facilities including toilets, snack bars and icecream and the sea water is watched over by the lifeguards. Combe Martin beach is more rocky but great for rock pooling and trying your hand at catching a few crabs. There are cafes, beach shops and pubs and car park right by the beach area.
Attractions in the area include:
For younger holiday makers we have: Combe Martin wildlife and dinosaur park, Watermouth castle theme park, Exmoor Zoo, Wood Bay railways all close by. Slightly further there is Go-karting in Barnstaple, The Big Sheep or Milky Way fun centres, Swimming at Ilfracombe and the leisure complex with swimming and gym in Barnstaple. Putting at Ilfracombe, Woolacombe or Lynmouth. Quad biking at Key Pits near Ilfracombe
For the active there is cycling on the Tarka Trail from Braunton to Torrington, over 17 miles of tarmac, formerley a rail line, skirting the edges of two river estuaries (Rivers Taw & Tor) with lovely views and several great stops on route for a rest and ice cream. Cycle close to your cottage at Whistlepound Reservoir only 3 miles a way. Cycle or walk around the reservoir on or if your a fisherman have a days fishing there. Play Tennis at the Tarka Tennis centre in Barnstaple. There are too many walks to mention but some of our favourites are Mortehoe to Leigh bay on the coastal path. Watersmeet along the river lynn, the valley of the rocks and one to Heddons Mouth. Had enought walking then how about a horse ride or a a round of golf.
Other attractions include Lynton/Lynmouth with its famous victorian railway up/down the cliff face, the famous Tar Steps, large stepping stones across the river. Steam railway line at Minehead. Dunster castle and village.
If shopping is your thing Barnstaple has a good selection of smaller shops, regular high street names are alongside individual and privately owned boutiques and a family run department shop. At Atlantic village, just past Bideford, there is a factory outlet for discounted goods including an M&S outlet. Barnstaple is also home to the Heritage Centre and Museum and the large indoor Panier Market.
There are theatres and cinemas at both Ilfracombe and Barnstaple.
Take the Tarka Line First Great Western train to Exeter for a further great day out.
Further attractions include Clovelly fishing vilage, Hartland Abbey and Hartland Point with its dramatic rock formations, and the famous biospheres at the Eden Project.
If houses and gardens are your thing, try Arlington Court, Marwood Gardens, Tapeley Park and of course the RHS gardens at Rosemoor.
