Farmhouse | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8
South facing house in quiet farming hamlet, ideally placed for access to choice of sandy beaches, walking on the coast path, or exploring Exmoor. Leys Cottage is the highest property in the farm hamlet of Churchill, East Down, about 4 miles due South from the coast at Combe Martin.
It is gloriously quiet - you are more likely to hear a tractor than a car and at night the stars glow brightly with no light pollution. There are buzzards on the telegraph poles and deer in the fields on the far side of the valley. Visitors have regularly commented that the term 'Cottage' in the name is misleading; it's a spacious 4 bedroom house. There is even room for a table tennis table downstairs.
The house has views to the south and east towards Arlington Court and Exmoor beyond. Originally built around 200 years ago, the house has been fully modernised and extended, and is used as a second home by its owners. It retains original features such as an old bread oven in the chimney breast, and exposed beams. It has easy access to excellent beaches (Woolacombe: 20-25 minutes by car), the coastal path (10-15 minutes) and Exmoor National Park (boundary 10 minutes). Close to good pub.
Note: the property is in the process of being sold, so we are not taking bookings beyond the end of August

The West Country region
North Devon has a great combination of some of the best beaches in the country (Woolacombe, Saunton Sands, Croyde), and fantastic countryside with wide open spaces for walking, both on the coastal path, with views across the Bristol Channel to Wales, and up on Exmoor.
Leys Cottage is in the hamlet of Churchill, across the valley from the National Trust property of Arlington Court. The west facing surfing beaches are all within 25-30 minutes drive, while the coast path and the Exmoor National Park are within 10-15 minutes drive. Exmoor is one of the great unspoiled wilderness areas in the south of England, with deep river valleys and wild open moorland, with red deer and Exmoor ponies. Pony trekking on the moor is available at a number of places relatively close to the cottage. For garden lovers, Marwood Gardens are close by (around 15 minutes), with RHS Rosemoor slightly further afield (around 45 minutes). For golfers, there are various pay and play courses within 30 minutes, plus the famous old courses at Saunton Sands and Westward Ho! (supposedly the only place name in England containing an exclamation mark). Sea fishing trips are available from Ilfracombe and Appledore, and day trip ferries to Lundy run regularly from either Ilfracombe or Bideford.
For cyclists, there is the Tarka Trail (an old railway line running from Braunton in the north, through Barnstaple and Bideford then south to Great Torrington and beyond). Bike hire is available at various points on the trail. It is named after Tarka the Otter - the real Tarka came from the River Torridge upstream from Bideford. We have seen a mother otter and cubs in the river there....although can't promise that you will be so lucky.
There are a wide variety of wet weather activities, including the Wildlife & Dinosaur Park at Combe Martin, the Cobbaton Combat Collection (military vehicles - great for small boys, and those who haven't really grown up), and the Big Sheep west of Bideford (sheep shearing and other farm related activities). For those needing retail therapy, there are various outlet stores at Atlantic Village, west of Bideford.
The towns of Ilfracombe, Barnstaple and Woolacombe, are all easily accessible. Ilfracombe is a traditional old Victorian seaside town, while Barnstaple has a traditional market (the Pannier Market) and a historic street of nineteenth century open fronted butchers' shops (Butchers' Row). It also has theatre, cinema, bowling and go-karting.

"Beautiful house that was full of character"
My husband, young child (two) and dog stayed there with friends of ours who also had a two-year old and dog so quite a full house! Plenty of room for a travel cot in every room if needed. The house … More
