F70 - Rock House
Cottage | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8
Right on the seafront in Combe Martin, a handsome, semi-detached Victorian house on three levels with typically lofty spaciousness and big bay windows, the better to enjoy its terrific sea views. It has recently been refurbished and made lovely. At the front, a few steps up to a small terrace facing out to sea and, at the back, 10 steps up to a terrace (table/chairs) with gate/steps to parking area.Living room with wood floor, pewter fireplace (open fire), TV/Sky/DVD, iPod dock and those views; big kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, electric range-style cooker/gas hob) with butler sink and original tiled floor; utility area (washing machine, tumble drier) with door to back terrace. From hall, stairs up to four bedrooms on two levels, all with TV – a capacious double (6' bed) with sofa, door to balcony (table/chairs) and fantastic sea view, and a bunk room (hooks for clothes-hanging); shower-room (suite); a few more steps up to a twin (hooks for clothes-hanging), and another double; bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). A great family house in a brilliant position for beach, shops, pubs, coastal path. Not suitable for anyone with mobility problems.

The West Country region
Exmoor: exquisite National Park beside the sea: beech trees, sheep, wheeling buzzards and heather hills, from many of which you look over the sea to Wales and its mountains. Below are the most gracefully carved of steep oak-filled valleys where rushing, bouldered little rivers are paddleable and the red deer spend the winters, and perhaps the most dream-like rose-covered cottage villages of them all, where the pace of life is leisurely. At night, marvellously unpolluted skies for stargazing (recently designated an International Dark Sky Reserve).
Porlock Vale is one of the most beautiful farmed bits of England, Dunkery must be ascended, the area of The Chains is wild and wonderful for walking or riding; the Oare valley (Lorna Doone country) is an excellent place to take Granny for a visit to tiny, fascinating Oare church, a cream tea in Malmsmead and a sunset drive afterwards through the Valley of the Rocks to Woody Bay (if you drive well). Minehead, the main town, is good for sandcastles, has a Butlins (and a good golf course and a harbour) and isn't too big. Medieval Dunster is very pretty and has a fine castle (inhabited, National Trust); Dulverton, on the southern edge of the moor and popular with artists, has interesting shops and galleries; Culbone church, one of England's smallest, is worth walking to. Lots of good food pubs in 'hidden' villages, like Luxborough, where the welcome is warm and the atmosphere relaxed.
Combe Martin: village (small pebble/rock pool beach, shops, pubs, church, wildlife park) ribboning down a valley to the sea on the edge of Exmoor. Beautiful 10 mile coast walk to Lynton/Lynmouth. Woolacombe's sand/surf beaches, 10 miles; Saunton (superb golf, beaches) and Braunton Burrows (nature reserve), 14; Ilfracombe (resort town, boats to Lundy Island), 7½.
