' about a mile from Southleigh, a large house beautifully converted from a barn (G191), a large farmhouse (G190) and two detached cottages (G192, G193), all set high on a hillside overlooking a picturesque valley, with almost 180 degree views of amazing rolling countryside. They are surrounded by approximately 200 acres of fields and bluebell woods which you are welcome to wander and enjoy deer and badger watching, the stream, trout lake (fishing), duck pond (carp fishing) and the gorgeous views. If this isn't enough, there's a range of activities on offer here (extra). These include clay pigeon shooting, amphibious vehicles and archery - tailor-made packages can be arranged. Horse riding/pony-trekking and deep sea fishing locally can also be arranged. Peacocks strut the grounds, as do roaming chickens and ducks (fresh eggs to collect), and the young, friendly owners who live next door are happy to show you their unusual pets (pigs, alpacas, ostrich, goats). Caterers can be recommended. The Barn is a smashing property, detached, south-facing, comfortable and well-equipped. At the front, brilliantly positioned to enjoy the immense views, a large, suntrap terrace (picnic benches, gas barbecue) and raised deck with private 8-person hot tub (covered) and further seating, plus children's play area with trampoline, swing, slide. Beyond this, your own enclosed grassed paddock area with plenty of room for cricket or to kick a ball around. Inside, smart, stylish and hugely spacious. At the front, a wonderfully light and sunny conservatory (table/chairs for 6 and comfy seating for 8, rowing machine, cross trainer) with French windows to small surrounding paved area. Porch (for coats/boots); enormous open-plan living area with big comfy sofas (TV/Sky/DVD, Wii, woodburner) through to smart slate/oak-floored kitchen/dining area with fitted oak units and central island (TV, dishwasher, washing machine, combi-microwave, fridge-freezer plus additional larder fridge and freezer, smart red electric Aga and electric companion hob/oven) with big oak dining table; full-sized pool table and football table; downstairs loo (washbasin); drying room. Off the main living area, but also with its own ramped entrance and made suitable for guests with mobility difficulties, a double bedroom (TV/DVD) with large en suite shower-room (suite) and little kitchenette/sitting area (larder fridge, microwave, TV/DVD) with sofa, table/chairs. Oak stairs (stairgates) from living area to first floor landing (quiet reading area with rocking chairs) and five bedrooms with en suite bathrooms (suites plus bath-showers) and TVs/DVDs, all cleverly designed to make the most of the roof space (some part sloping ceilings/Velux windows): the large master double, another neat double, and a twin, all looking out over fields behind; at the front, with rolling valley views, another smart twin and a long, narrowish room with two singles plus pull-out truckle beds (sloping ceiling, best for maximum of 2 adults/2 children or 4 children).Use of owners' phone, by arrangement. Lots to see and do nearby and plenty of on-site options for fun activities or total relaxation. Arrival after 4pm. Damages Deposit '250. Best for maximum of 12 adults.

The Devon region

East Devon: that is Devon east of the river Exe and Exeter - Devon's capital with superb cathedral and much else attractive. Here is the most smiling of lush farmland and most dramatically hilly, the easiest to see from a car because the lanes are less narrow, the hedges less high. Domed hills rise abruptly and steeply, baize-green fields to crowns of woods or sentinel beech trees, half-way up farmsteads like a children's-book idyll. Woodbury Common is a small high moor with heather and Scots pine trees and fine newish golf course.

Exmouth is a resort with lots of sandy beach and boats. The Exe estuary is full of yachts and has one of Devon's prettiest villages, Lympstone, beside it. A shore of mainly pebbles keeps the area comparatively quiet, though the coast is attractive with white and red cliffs, pleasant, civilised towns like Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton and villages like Beer and Branscombe. Its inland villages tend to be pretty: Broadhembury is special - and the view from Hembury Hill (fort) is sensational. Hardly anyone seems to visit the lovely Blackdown Hills - big beech woods, smart fields with thoroughbred horses - on its northern border. You can have flying lessons at Dunkeswell aerodrome and there is an excellent (flat) cycle track, punctuated by pubs, from Exeter beside the Exe estuary to the sea. The whole east Devon coast is called a 'World Heritage Coastline'.

Colyton

Southleigh: an unspoilt and off-the-beaten-track village (church, annual show in August) in a valley 3 miles west of Colyton (shops, pubs). Honiton (mainline railway station), 7½ miles; Exeter airport, 20; the beaches/sea at Branscombe and Beer, 4; Sidmouth (seaside town), 8; and pretty Lyme Regis, 9.
