The Dumfries and Galloway region
Dumfries and Galloway is a relatively unspoilt area encompassing all types of countryside from hills through moorland and farmland to coastal cliffs and beaches. Because it is a "hidden gem" the traffic tends to be less (and drivers more courteous) while it is easier to find parking (still mainly free) and entry to attractions quicker.
There is something for everyone including sailing, swimming, riding, fishing, golf and water sports and also National Trust properties at Threave together with numerous Historic Scotland properties including Threave Castle and Caerlaverock Castle all within easy reach.
The local towns of Castle Douglas (Scotland's Food Town) and Kirkcudbright (The Artist's Town), provide ample opportunities for exploring and sampling the local food and drink available fron the shops and hotels.
