The Tuscany region
The Tuscan Region of Italy is well known for its warm balmy summers, beautiful countryside, rolling hills, mouth - watering food, and of course its towns and villages, rich with mediaeval architecture…
The Garfagnana region of Tuscany, often known as its 'Green Lung' is situated away from the milling crowds that can often be found at the most famous Tuscan locations and is totally unspoilt, remaining untouched by tourism. The scenery is spectacular, green and mountainous with views of both the Apuane and Appenine mountains at every turn…And, due to the altitude whilst the weather can be very hot, it is always pleasantly cool for sleeping…
The food is usually home made, using home grown produce, and is typically simple and extremely tasty. Prices here remain very reasonable due to the fact that food is prepared with the locals, and not tourists in mind…The local wine is cheap and surprisingly drinkable!
The pace of life is slow and peaceful – spend your days enjoying secluded picnics, swimming in rivers, or watching locals play bocce or 'cheese throwing'. Visit hundreds of ancient hill top villages, or relax at home basking in stunning scenery. For 'townie' days, visit the mediaeval towns of Barga, Lucca, Castelnuovo, with Pisa and Florence within easy reach too…This is Olde Worlde Italy.
The villa is situated in a private edge of village location, in the heart of the Garfagnana, 1 hour 15 minutes north of Lucca.
This charming little village has a basic shop, and a village bread van also comes 6 days a week. There is a bar/cafè and some other shops circa 1km away, and Piazza al Serchio, the closest larger village has many shops and amenities, and a few restaurants.
This is a peaceful location, in the midst of the countryside, with many pretty hilltop villages to visit, as well as National Parks. There is the Santuario at Argegna, the lake of Gramalazzo, the fortress of Verrucole, and the property is also ideal for exploring Lunigiana.....
For non local days out, the coast (Lerici and the Cinque Terre) are just over an hour away by car, Lucca is a 90 minute drive, Pisa 1 hr 40 mins and Florence 2 hours or so... The market town of Castelnuovo is a 25 min drive and the beautiful mediaeval town of Barga 40 mins away.....
here is a house next door, but screened with trees, and shrubs, and at the end of the garden there is an area/barn with farm animals belonging to one of the villagers. The animals (rabbits, chickens and goat) are constant residents and popular with children of guests. The owner of the animals comes to feed them once or twice per day but does not live in the location.
NB - final access is via a 20 M long narrow road way but one can enter driveway and turn around for coming back out! For those guests with large cars it may be preferable to park at the bottom of this access road.
