The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
The Axarquia region is steeped in history, with Moorish villages scattered like sugar cubes on the mountainsides. Folklore tells stories of highwaymen and bandits who hid in the many alleyways of these villages. At it's centre is Lake Vinuela, 25 minutes away, where there are some good restaurants, including fish and chips and even 2 curry houses ( if you must ! )
The coast is only 35 minutes away, where the beach at Torre del Mar is gently sloping backed by a long promenade, with many fish restaurants to choose from.
Slightly further afield are Antequera 40 minutes,, Malaga city 40 minutes, Ronda 70 minutes and Granada 90 minutes, all worth a visit if you can drag yourself away from the pool!
The climate ranges from mild and sometimes wet in the Winter, to very hot in the Summer.Spring is very beautiful as the verges are full of flowers, and the climate is warm without being too hot.
Colmenar area
El Romo is a small hamlet sitting between the villages of Comares, Colmenar, and Riogordo. Comares is the highest village in the Axarquia region, and well worth a visit as the views from there are breathtaking.
This is real rural Spain, where the hills are covered with almond and olive trees, and you will hear the tinkling bells of the the herds of goats as they are shepherded up and down the mountains.
There is a small bar in walking distance, where some of the locals tie up their "mulos" whilst they have a drink . Here Maria can make tapas for you, they have a good menu ( in English )or just sit and enjoy a drink with the friendly locals.
Local activities include horse riding, walking, swimming, quad biking, cycling. There is a Water Park at Velez Malaga, 30 minutes away, and a Wolf Park at Antequera, about 40 minutes away, and Golf at Antequera or Baviera Golf 30 minutes away.
How to get there
Flights to Malaga which in only 50 minutes away by car with Easyjet, Thomsonfly, BMI Baby, Ryanair from all major UK airports. Car hire is available from Malaga airport, and works out cheaper to prebook in the UK. Many companies operate from the airport, including Holiday Autos, Hertz, Helle Hollis, Record and Crown. From the airport, take the N331 Motorway for Antequera and Cordoba. Turn off at the A356 to Colmenar and Riogordo. El Romo sits between the 2 villages, easily accessible via a tarmac road and a short concrete track. 4x4 not required, a normal hire car is fine.
