Casa de la Abuela is set in the oldest part of the village, a stone's throw from the 13th Century church. Park your car outside the front door and step into the dining room and lounge. The extending table seats 8 people and there is enough crockery and cutlery to go round! Come through into the cosy lounge area with 2 sofas, chairs, coffee table, TV, DVD player, hifi system, bookcase with holiday reading and games. There is a log-burning stove for those chilly nights! Down a couple of steps into the breakfast area which has a table for 2 then through the arch into the inside patio which reaches up to the roof. Here there is a sideboard housing glasses and cutlery. Go through into the rustic kitchen which is equipped with fridge/freezer, gas cooker, microwave, washing machine, kettle and toaster. You'll find all the utensils, kitchenware and crockery you need, and there's even a large paella pan if you're feeling adventurous!
The downstairs bathroom is also off the patio.
Come up the stairs from the patio into the oldest part of the house with antique double doors into a bedroom. Here you'll find a kingsize bed, wardrobe and drawers, and views across to the Montes de Malaga Natural Park. Up a few steps and you're in the second bathroom. Climb a few more steps (yes, really!) and you'll find 2 more bedrooms, both with double beds and storage.
Come through the bedrooms and down a 2nd staircase and you're back in the dining room!
Under the stairs is a cupboard where you'll find the iron and ironing board, brushes and beach umbrellas.
Go through the back door and you'll find yourself on a shady terrace with table and chairs. The boiler-room is here together with spare gas bottles.
The terraced garden faces South and enjoys full sun from sunrise to sunset! The lemon trees provide more shady areas. Steps down take you to the first sun terrace equipped with steamer chairs, lounger chairs, a hammock, a sun shelter covered in bourganvilla and a large umbrella. There's another table and 4 chairs here. Down again finds the garden shower. There are 2 more terraces with lemon trees and flowering shrubs, and all with stunning views across the valley

The Andalucia region
Andalusia was the gateway to Spain for the Arabic conquest and its architecture and culture reflects the diversity that this brought. Summers are always hot with very little rain, spring is green with wild flowers everywhere and autumn is warmer than the English summer!
Colmenar is on the edge of the Montes de Malaga Natural Park which has many walks and trails for mountain-biking. The house is situated in the old part of the village, a short walk up the hill from the village square.
There is a huge variety of hill, valley and coastal walks in close proximity, including Lake Vinuela. The historic cities of Granada, Sevilla and Granada are an easy day out with excellent motorway connections. The coast is a mere 40 minute drive where there are quiet beaches away from the commercial Costa del Sol. The nearest resort is Torre del Mar which has a long promenade and lovely sea-front gardens. There are plenty of beach bars and restaurants here and a relaxed feel. A short drive back towards Colmenar takes you past Il Ingenio shopping mall with a Multiplex Cinema which usually has English films showing. Going in the other direction past Malaga takes you to the commericla resorts of Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola and of course, Marbella. A drive further down the Costa del Sol to Algeciras or Tarifa will give you a short sea-crossing to Morocco. Malaga itself is a vibrant city with historic quarters largely overlooked by tourists, and only a 30 minute drive from Colmenar. Antequera is an historic town some 30 minutes drive away, and there is Lobo Park where wolves are protected another few kms out of Antequera.
Colmenar itself boasts many shops, bars and restaurants. There is a pharmacy and a 24 hour health centre. The municipal swimming pool is open in July and August. There are two historic churches and a Museum of Honey which celebrates Colmenar's bee-keeping traditions.
The surrounding countryside is mountainous and the trees are mostly pine, olive and almond.
