Collioure is a lively, busy village with lovely beaches, restaurants and shops. It is a three minute walk away but it is also nice to relax in the garden which has shady and sunny areas with loungers, outdoor dining and hammock.
The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

Collioure is a charming, small French port with narrow, buzzing streets; safe, clean, beaches; a wide selection of restaurants, in a stunning setting at the foothills of the Pyrenees. It's a delight to stroll around -big enough for plenty of interest but also intimate and lively. The local tourist office have excellent information on all that is going on in the area. Most evenings in the summer there is some free entertainment available- music, dancing and, on special occasions, massive fireworks displays in Collioure or adjoining villages.
There is an excellent market twice a week for vegetables, cheeses and local produce (Wednesday and Sundays). There are delightful walks (from our front door) into the vine covered hills above the village and across to Port Vendres - a lovely working port with the best fish market/shop ever. There are many other beaches and coves to explore along the coast - at the bay at Pauilles, Le Racou, and beyond. .
The Collioure area
There is plenty to do in Collioure for a week or two without having to consider roaming further. The beaches are prefect for children of all ages - Port D'Avall for small children while teenagers tend to prefer the other side of the village where there is a small sailing club which teaches sailing and windsurfing. Kayaking, diving or renting a small speed boat are easy to organise in the village.
Check out the tourist office in Place Juin 18 who produce a newsletter with all the entertainment on locally. Many are free, good fun and family orientated.
Stroll around the town which is filled with quirky shops and galleries. Relax for a coffee or drink in Les Templiers - also good for eating. Collioure has lots a good eating spots at all prices. Le 5 Peches is special but not for children.
Don't miss any televised sporting events- Cafe Sola is the hub for following the major events - rugby, soccer and golf.
Super municipal tennis courts just above the village - get Pierre LaRoque to improve your swing. Private lessons very reasonable priced. Very easy and cheap to book a court. (Telephone 0033 4 68 82 47 55)
Visit the Chateau - either walk around it or go to one of the many concerts which are held there.
If you want to stray further some recommendations:
Go to Ceret -a delightful Catalan town in the hills above. Each summer the Musee de Picasso hosts a major exhibition. Great market on Saturdays.
Aqualand in St Cyprien (20 mins by car) is very popular with children and terrifying for adults
Take a trip on the ferry to Argeles and Port Vendres or the large sailing boat in Collioure which also does day trips to Spain. Buy fantastic fish in the Port Vendres fish market.
Visit Maillot's House, Catalan sculptor, whose home above Banyuls is a museum. Have the wine tasting meal at Clos de Pauilles (10 mins from Collioure). Fabulous restaurant beside the beach. A set menu served with their wines for about £25.
Perpignan is an interesting town -definitely worth a visit and if eating you could try Lorenz O. During the summer there are often large free concerts in the Place de Republic. The list is endless and there are lots of guides in the house for further information.
