The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the most fascinating regions of France, bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the east , the Pyrenees Mountains to the south and the Massif Central to the north . It benefits from an exceptional climate and has an unusually rich wildlife, a spectacular coast, and surprising history.
Things to see include mountains, rivers and lakes, ancient cities, towns, villages, thermal springs, abbeys, cathedrals, châteaux and castles, notably the famous mountain fortresses popularly known as Cathar Castles.
It possesses a number of World Heritage sites, including Carcasonne, the Canal du Midi, and the Pont du Gard.
The Pyrénées-Orientales is the most southerly department of France. Officially it's been part of France since the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees, but by whatever name you choose to describe the area, French Catalunya, Pyrénées-Orientales or Roussillon, it still retains a unique atmosphere and identity. Some will attribute this to the cuisine, some the wine, others the beautiful and diverse landscape, but many will say it’s the mountain of Canigou. This beautiful mountain dominates the skyline and has been attributed almost mythical status in Cataln folklore.
Places to see include: Perpignan, Villfranche-de-Conflent, Céret, Castelnou and more
The Collioure area
We're sure you'll love Collioure!
This delightful and evocative seaside town is known as the 'gem of the Roussillon' – with four small bays and beaches lapped by the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean its flanked by the bellhouse (a former lighthouse) of Eglise Notre-dame-des Anges, and the Chateau Royal.
This small ancient fishing village on the Mediterranean lies at the foot of the majestic Pyrenees and is situated in the heart of Catalan country. There are also great views to the local vineyards.
The local culture, folklore, tradition and food of Collioure reflect its proximity to Spain and its closeness to the sea. It’s not exactly France, yet neither is it Spain. Its ambiance is wrapped in its Catalan spirit.
Collioure is the kind of place you fall in love with and want to come back again and again to enjoy its uninterrupted sunshine, its unique charm and it s breathtaking views.
There’s history and tradition and art. The ancient fishing harbour, Le Château Royal (built on Roman foundations – a summer palace for the Kings of Majorca), the vineyards, the inspirational art of Matisse, Picasso and Derain. There are the famous anchovies and the wines – how about a refreshing Rosé watching the world go by in a seafront café terrace? Then there are the festivals and the fireworks!
Collioure with its narrow pedestrianised streets, colourful art and craft shops, bars, enticing cafés, restaurants and superb beaches is an ideal base for exploring the nearby Pyrenees mountain villages, with the Spanish border just 12 miles away. 4 miles north is the larger resort of Argeles, 17 miles away is the city of Perpignan with its delightful, Spanish influenced architecture
There’s sport – Rugby with USAP and Catalans Dragons and football with FC Barcelona being the locals favourites (Barcelona is 115 miles south, a 2 hour drive).
There’s sailing and waterskiing. Then in winter the Pyrenees beckon for hiking, skiing and dog sledding. Skiing in the Pyrenees at Font Romeu is an approx. one and a half hours drive westwards (with 40 ski trails and 32 mechanical lifts).
There's also golf close by at St Cyprien. Tennis, Riding, Parascending, Scuba Diving & Snorkelling, Cycling and Walks all available locally.
The line of "le Petit Train Jaune de la Cerdagne" climbs dramatically from Villefranche de Conflent to highest station in Europe at Bolquère than on to Latour de Carol and is an absolute delight for both adults and children alike!
Les clos de Paulillies - A place to go. Dinner on the terrace at the ferme Auberge les clos de Paulilles, on the Baie de Paulilles vineyard estate, Port Vendres 66660 (RN 114) comes highly recommended. Sommelier Francois provides commentary as you sample the estate's wines whilst dining under the pines at your table set within the walled terrace.
There’s something for everyone – young and old! Anyone with the Joie de Vivre!

We stayed at Residence Colline in August with our 17 year old son and 12 year old daughter. The apartment is a real home from home and extremely comfortable. The terrace out the back is a lovely private area and we ate there most evenings. The pool area is lovely. My daughter made friends with other children around the pool of all ages and nationalities, and despite having a broken arm was hardly out of the water. Collioure itself is stunning and an easy walk from the apartment. Our plan was to use the apartment as a base and travel to nearby areas - however once we parked the car in the garage on the Saturday, we didn't use it again until the following Saturday !! I would thoroughly recommend a visit. |

We have two children, 10 and 13, and found the apartment perfect for our requirements. There is plenty of space for everyone and a well equipped kitchen, ideal as we cooked many meals and enjoyed them sitting out on the lovely quiet terrace at the rear. The children loved the swimming pool which was clean and well maintained. The whole apartment was clean and comfortable and felt like home, with plenty of storage space. We enjoyed our stay very much, it was ideal to stay in the quiet apartment complex about 15-20 minutes walk from Collioure. The town has a lovely atmosphere and we enjoyed exploring all the lovely little side streets and restaurants. |

"Every now and then beautiful Angels appear, cleverly disguised as ordinary human beings"
Hi Corinne , we had a fantastic week in Collioure. The apartment was nice and clean when we arrived and was well stocked with everything you could possibly want for a stress free holiday. Our teenage daughter appreciated the Sky TV and the generous amount of wardrobe space with plenty of clothes hangers! Thank you for letting us rent your apartment. We would love to stay there again and have no hesitation in recommending it to others. Mark Fisher & Family June 09
Hi Corinne, just a quick note to say what a lovely place you've got here!
The fireworks in the bay were spectacular and the party in the marquee on the beach was wild! The atmosphere was amazing. A great place to start 2009. Happy New Year!

Hello again. We are just home after a great holiday in France. We enjoyed Collioure very much, the weather was beautiful, so we've had a simply wonderful week! We rented a car for the last 2 days and visited medieval Villefrance de Conflent, the Dali Museum in Figures, Cadaquesand Besulu just into Spain and picturesque Castelnou (all to be recommended). The map we found in the apartment guided us from Collioure up past the Hermitage to Tour de Madeloc - a great walk through the terraced vineyards. Thank you for letting us rent your lovely apartment. Undoubtedly we will contact you again soon for a reprise! Wonderful! Kind regards AD. Nov 2008.
Dear Corinne and Clive,
Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our stay at your Collioure apartment – it’s probably the best-equipped apartment we have ever stayed in – you’ve thought of everything! We'll certainly be recommending your apartment.
Kindest regards, V and I - October 2008
Thank you. Forgot how nice it is here! I hope we can come again!

Thank you so much for letting us stay at your wonderful apartment. We've had a great time. Weather has been just right for 2 small children. Kathryn has loved the pool. We've had a really lovely time. The St Vincent festival fireworks were great too - though Michael was a little unsure!
Lisa, David, Kathryn & Michael 11 - 19 Aug 2008
Back again because we love it so much! The weather has been very hot - 35 degrees C at 8.30 pm - so the pool's been very much welcomed! We've been to the beach, go karts - the kids favourite - & hired a boat from Port Argeles to go along the coast. Just such a fab time once more.
Claire Andrew Thomas Charlie 27 July - 9 Aug 2008
We've had a fab few days, it's been great popping over the border for a few days R & R. Muchas Gracias!!
J & A Barcelona, Spain 23 - 30 June 08
What a great holiday. The weather's been v. good & Isabella has enjoyed every minute. I think she's going to be a bit disappointed when she gets home and realises that she can't go to the beach everyday for the rest of her life!

It's hard to think that we first came here 5 years ago. We love it more & more each time. Another relaxed time. It's just perfect after months of toil at work! Thank you again for letting us share your home from home.

Hello again. We are back after a great holiday in France. We enjoyed Collioure very much, the weather was beautiful, so we had a simply wonderful week! We rented a car for the last 2 days and visited Villefrance, Le Perthus and Castelnou (very impressive). We found a map in the apartment and it guided us from Collioure up to Tour de Madeloc (along the edge from north) - a very nice walk. Thank you for renting us your lovely apartment. Maybe we will contact you once again.
Regards GC. May 2008.
Just a little note to say thanks ever so much for all your help and everything that you did to make our stay in Collioure so wonderful.
LH - May 2008
Thank you, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay - your apartment is great and your taste on décor 'just so', the king size bed was brilliant. Collioure is amazing and we will return. Directions were useful but we did get lost around Rouen - took a wrong turn etc. - but way back was easier. Bourges was also very interesting, although again took a wrong turning to our Hotel - but fine for the rest of the journey.
Kind regards, PC – April 2008
