Home description
From the house, cloister, and balcony there are magnificent views of the distant Pyrenees and nearby sixteenth-century Chateau St Elme. Outside the front door the lane leads straight up into the foothills of the Pyrenees or a five-minute walk down to the beach, restaurants, and shops. It has a picturesque cloister providing a romantic setting for evening meals under the stars or a lazy siesta under the arches during the day. There is a large garden, with paths running down from terraces through cypress and lemon trees to two secluded areas for drinks or relaxation, with a former orchid house for garden furniture. There is a large lock-up garage and private parking space beside the lane.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
Until Louis XIV acquired the Roussillon at the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659 the province belonged to Spain. The castle of St Elme immediately above the house was built by the Emperor Charles V in 1530. The Catalan language, formerly spoken by almost all the inhabitants of Collioure, can still be heard in the narrow winding streets.
Collioure / Faubourg area
Visit local vineyards or the Domaine des Dominicains for wine tasting (try the famous local Rivesaltes and Banyuls), artists' studios, the handsome church beside the Plage St Vincent, the Collioure Museum, or take an evening stroll along the waterfront and pier.
Collioure, known as the jewel of the Cote Vermeille, is an ancient walled town dominated by the mediaeval castle of the kings of Majorca and the famous waterfront church and clocher of St Vincent. Almost every surrounding hill is surmounted by castles dating from the sixteenth century to the Napoleonic era. Within the walls are narrow streets formerly occupied by the Catalan-speaking fishing community, and now much frequented by artists. In earlier times its picturesque architecture, romantic setting, and unique light attracted celebrated artists such as Matisse, Derain, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Picasso. There is a twice-weekly colourful market, bullring, lovely harbour and pier, and excellent shops and restaurants. Further inland visitors can explore ancient hilltop towns, Cathar castles, romanesque monasteries such as Elne, or the ancient city of Perpignan.
Outdoor activities include walking, sailing, swimming, diving, windsurfing, mountaineering, fishing, tennis, and golf.
