The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

Collioure is nestled amongst the rocky coastal coves, close to the Spanish border where the foothills of the Pyrénées meet the sea.
The town boasts cobbled streets of amazing colour, countless art galleries, wonderful restaurants and cafés and numerous markets and shops.
And for those seeking sand and surf, there are no less than four beaches.
But Collioure is perhaps best known for its artistic heritage.
The Collioure / Faubourg area
Architecture:
Le Château Royal XIII - XVIIIè The Château Royal was built on Roman foundations and is the centre of Collioure's medieval fortification.
Le Fort Saint Elme XVI The fort was built in 1552 by the Spanish King Charles V and is on a hill overlooking Collioure and Port-Vendres.
La Tour de Madeloc XIII Get a breathtaking view from this tower 652 m above sea level. It was once used as a watch tower for the Spanish coast. Today it is a television tower!
Eglise Notre Dame des Anges XVII The church's original foundations were built in the sea. Since then it has seen more extensions than DIY television show. The belfry was built in the Middle Ages, the nave in 1684 and it was given extensive renovations in 1672 and 1818.
Cloître du Couvent des Dominicains XIV The cloister once fell victim to illegal art trade, but was bought back by the municipality in 1992 after it had been discovered in Anglet. Now eleven of its arches are in the garden of Parc Pams.
Festivals include:
Easter: Good Friday: Sanch Procession (procession along the stations of the cross)
June 23rd :Festival of St. John: St. John's fires are lit in accordance with an old tradition.

We felt very much at home in 20 Rue du Soleil, which is an historic fisherman's cottage in a largely quiet, narrow road [immortalised by Matisse] a short distance from one of Collioure's nicest town beaches. Within a few minutes' walk there is a boulangerie, a minimarket, a small shop selling local wine and other specialities, the Museum of Modern Art, as well as a good selection of restaurants, so we were rather spoilt for choice. The cottage is attractive, tastefully furnished and well-equipped, with pretty fabrics, comfortable beds, great wardrobe space, good showers and we even had the luxury of full-length mirrors! There is a good selection of kitchen pots and utensils and a large fridge. In the lounge there is plenty of information to help you to make the most of your visit, along with fiction, art books [on Fauvism], CDs and DVDs. We were very pleased with the keypad system that frees you from worrying about losing the key and felt very lucky to have the garage so close, even though we did little driving, as parking is at a premium in Collioure. It was also reassuring to know that Jane, the agent ,was nearby, although we encountered no problems during our stay, so did not have to contact her. Collioure itself is a feast for the eyes, with its historic buidings in sunbaked Mediterranean colour palette, its attractive little winding streets, cafes and galleries. Although hardly unkown to tourists, it remains essentially unspoilt and seemed to us to be an almost timeless example of the best of Catalonia and the South of France. In September there are enough people to create a vibrant 'buzz' without being overfacingly busy. As we were lucky with the weather, on this first visit, we concentrated on relaxing and exploring Collioure, venturing no further than Port Vendres and Racou Plage, where we had a delicious gourmet fish lunch at a restaurant opposite the Hotel L'Oasis. We are already looking forward to our next visit! |

The house is great and was very suitable for us two familys we four children 7, 8, 9 and 13 years old. We also must say that the service provided is perfect and the contact with the owners before and after our stay has been excellent and very friendly The city itself is a gem and so is the surroundings both the sea and the mountain area. We will definitely go back! |
Guestbook for 20 Rue du Soleil
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cottage. It is wonderfully postioned, well equipped and served our needs admirably. Collioure is an attractive and interesting town. We particualrly enjoyed the artist trail and was surprised to discover Matisse had a painting called Rue De Soleil.
I also have to say the local seafood restaurant is a delight. We ate there several times. It was tough to come away. We may have to come back.

Wonderful town, and surroundings. Very friendly residents. A feeling of tranquility and peace. Lots to do if you want to, but lovely to just wander around and sit outside a cafe and look around. Blue skies all the time we were there. The cottage is superb, perfectly set up. We will go again.

We couldn’t believe that we had never heard of this stunning village before but are delighted to have discovered it now! It’s large enough to feel that you are always discovering a new corner, small enough that you can walk everywhere and with a wealth of restaurants to suit every occasion and budget. We loved waking up in the morning in the tranquil cottage and yet still being able to stroll just 80 yards down to the beach front.
