Home description
The apartment is located in a private "Coproprietaire" in a quiet residential area of Collioure only 10 mins walk to the town centre, beaches and the numerouse restaurants the town has to offer. The south-west facing private balcony ("Loggia") allows the occupants to enjoy direct views to the Pyrenees. Breakfast on the balcony is special!.
The Coproprietaire contains a large private outdoor pool (open June through September), wooded grounds and a hard surface tennis court. A designated car space (vital for summer months) is included. These onsite facilities and those provided in the spacious apartment provide the holidaymaker with complete independence while being able to relax in a quiet and safe setting.
The Pyrenees and their foothills (known locally as "Les Alberes") descend to the sea in this region giving rise to a spectacular terrain and coastline ("Le Cote Rocheuse") with many coves and beaches. There are 3 beaches at the Collioure seafront alone and a couple more nearby. Many designated walkways ("Randonnees") originate at the town and will take the walker as far into the Pyrenees as their sense of adventure allows!. The mountain roads are great (but challenging!) for cycling. Collioure looks majestic and has a real sense of the Mediterranean. It allows the holidaymaker to have the holiday of their choice from the quiet and relaxed to the energetic and adventurous.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
Languedoc-Roussillon covers a large area of south-eastern France. Many famous historical cities are to be found in the region such as Perpignan, Narbonne, Montpelier, Nimes and Beziers. These cities and indeed the entire region has a colourful and dramatic history going back to Roman times when the "Via Domitia" was built near Narbonne by the Roman Emperor of that name. The medieval period was turbulent during which the Cathar "heresy" initially flourished and was then suppressed. They left a legacy of fortified mountain-top fortresses whose spectacular ruins are well worth a visit. The region incorporates French Catalonia which was once part of a unified Catalan kingdom and was only ceded by Spain to France in 1659. The Catalan influence is still significant in Collioure and the surrounding areas. Languedoc-Roussillon contains famous wine growing regions such as Corbieres and Minervois and many other regional varieties.
Collioure / Collioure D'Amont area
Collioure is, undoubtedly, the most spectacular town in the Department of Pyrenees-Orientales. Situated on the coast where the Pyrenees descend to the sea the terrain is dramatic and varied. The foothills of the Pyrenees, known locally as "Les Alberes" are covered with trees giving the area the name of "Le Cote Vermeille". The coastline is dramatic with many coves and small secluded beaches. The rocky aspect is reflected in the name "Le Cote Rocheuse" by which it's known locally.
The more arid hillsides around the town are covered with vineyards that produce wines of which the locals are justifiably proud, especially the Rose. The fortified wines, "Banyuls" and "Rivesaltes" are specialties of this region. There are a number of "Caves" in the town where locally produced wines can be sampled ("Degustation") and bought.
The town is very old and accordingly it has many narrow traffic-free streets that are perfect for sauntering and viewing the surprisingly large number of shops and boutiques. The common architecture consists of 3 and 4 storey narrow "fishermens' houses" ("Maisons des pecheurs") that are now modernised and very well maintained with their walls and shutters painted in lovely luminous colours.
The seafront is dominated by the huge Chateau Royale, that dates back to the 12th century and was once the summer residence of the Kings of Majorca. Today, it's used for indoor concerts and exhibitions. There is a 17th century Church that has incorporated a former light-house to become its bell tower. It's probably the most painted church tower in all of France!,
The town was made famous in the very early 1900s by the arrival of the artists Matisse, Derain and Picasso who were attracted by the unusual colours afforded by the combination of sea, sun and hilly landscapes. Other famous painters lived and worked here. Today there are about a dozen working studios in the town which are open to the public 6 or even 7 days a week. Most of the artists are in residence.
There are up to 40 restaurants and cafes that encompass the full range of the gourmet experience. At night, those that have the space, facilitate outdoor eating ("A la exterieur"). The restaurants are very child-friendly, but be aware that French children are noticeably well behaved. There are few bars in the UK or Irish sense and night life is quiet. In the late evening it's a common sight to see couples and family groups idly strolling and enjoying an ice-cream while others sit outdoors at the beach-front cafes enjoyding a cocktail. The locals can be found in "Les Templiers" bar while the "Le Petit Cafe" serves cocktails till all hours. There is a "Casino" on the outskirts which welcomes adults of all ages. As well as providing live entertainment it serves food and alcohol.
The local beaches are great for children as they are of a manageable size and have life guards in the summer. They are also right at the town front so it's easy to shower off and go have a sit-down lunch without losing sight of "your beach spot". A variety of boat trips that explore the local coast depart hourly in the summer months . Some go further afield down as far as Spain. There is a diving school in Collioure and lessons can be booked in a local diving school. About 5km away, the huge blue-flag sandy beaches of Argeles and St Cyprien are easily accessed by car and public transport. The sea around here is extensivley used by wind-surfers.
Four walking routes originate in the town. These "Randonnees" are fully marked and officially designated. They will take the walker into the local hills and much further into the mountains depending on his/her ambitions. In less than an hour the walker will be able to enjoy fantastic views of the countryside and the coastline, literally for miles. There are a multitude of narrow (but hilly!) country roads that are ideal for cyclists. Bicycles can be hired in the town.
There are three villages near to Collioure that are among the 150 or so officially designated "most beautiful villages in France". These are Castelneau (Newcastle!), Eus and Villefrance-Le-Conflent. They are between 60 and 100 minutes distant by car. They should be visited if at all possible. Ceret is another town worth visiting as is the former fortress town of Prats-De-Mollo in the Pyrennes, close to the Spanish border, with its old town walls and narrow streets.
The Spanish border is only 25 minutes away and there are some towns worth visiting such as Roses, Cadaques and Figueres. All of these are associated with Dali, either being his birthplace, his residence or where a museum dedicated to his work is located. Drive to these places along the dramatic coast road (scary in places!). Barcelona is about 2 hours away and can be reached either by train for motorway (A9).
Collioure is about 2 hours from skiing, at Fort St Romeau and Les Angles, in the Pyrennees.
How to get there
Fly with Ryanair from Stanstead to Perpignan (30 mins away), Girona or Carcassone (1.25 hours away) or, from Ireland, fly to either Girona or Cascassone (all by Ryanair). Are Lingus flies to Barcelona or Toulouse (2.5 hours) Car hire is easily available at each of the above airports. (You can use ebookers.ie to book car hire). There is a very good train service from Perpignan to Collioure.(22 mins). There is also a public bus service from Perpignan to Collioure. From 2008...............
We had a wonderful time this summer at your apartment......we have been to Collioure many times but your place is by far our favourite. Jane Brock
We had an excellent break in Collioure, thank-you, and the accommodation was spot on. Weather and the village were great as usual. Dr S Harper
Thanks for lending us the property! We really enjoyed our time in Collioure (for the 2nd time) and can't wait to get back. We have recommended your place to a friend here in derby. We found the apartment very comfortable and just right for what we needed. Thanks again Kevin Newman
We had a brilliant time in Collioure, the house was just perfect, clean and well-maintained and the temperatures reached 35 degrees . We would definitely recommend your property and the location Also did you know you can see the house quite clearly down to the "pineapple tree" out front and the balcony on Google earth - satellite map. Thanks again, Regards Barbara Jones
I want to tell you that from a woman's and lodging owner's point of view, that your place is ideal. Though they are descriptive, your photos don't do it justice!! We couldn't have asked for anything more, unless a few more weeks!!! We each (broter and us) each brought one of the Collioure wine bottles home -- of course, empty! Good wine! Thank you for the thought. Thanks again for making our visit to Collioure so enjoyable -- we plan to return. Becky & Paul McCready Ouray, Colorado
