The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
The Pyrénées Orientales department is situated in the Pyrénées region. From the miles of sandy beaches of Argeles to the imposing mountains and ski slopes of the Pyrenees this area has everything to offer. The climate is very attractive too - 300 days of sunshine a year! The region is dotted with typical french towns and villages of character. Between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, lies the ancient city of Perpignan which was once coveted by Spain, but today is the capital of Roussillon and French Catalonia. It’s a lovely city to explore on foot, to do some shopping and strolling in the shade of palm and plane trees beside the cooling waters of fountains. Carcassone, further north, a medieval walled city steeped in history, is captivating. Come and discover Catalonia's extraordinarily rich natural, architectural and gastronomic heritage. Explore the tracks from the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean and enjoy the traditional warm and friendly Catalan hospitality.
Collioure area
COLLIOURE .
Collioure, the gem of the Cote Vermeille, is a picture postcard village with a small fishing port and four beautifully clean crescent -shaped beaches.Against the backdrop of vineyards and pinched between the mountains and the sea, the village is made up of narrow pedestrianised cobbled streets which offer a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, boulangeries, art galleries, wine shops and even a small art house cinema. Art lovers will have no difficulty recognising scenes immortalised by the Fauvist artists Matisse and Derain, who spent many summers in Collioure. 'No sky in all France is more blue than that of Collioure. I only have to close the shutters of my room and there before me are all the colours of the Mediterranean' - so effused Matisse.
Restaurants. A wonderful selection of restaurants, that even in high season do not require prebooking, offer an excellent range of delicious menus at very reasonable prices.Open all year round
Walking. The excellent Tourist office provides a range of guidebooks. Hill walkers will enjoy trekking up to the mountain summits while there are also more leisurely strolls to be taken around the coast.
Markets. It is possible to catch a market every day in the region. Every Wednesday and Sunday stroll down to the market offering local crafts and fresh farm produce in the centre of Collioure. For fish lovers there is a daily fish market in nearby Port Vendres.
Wine. Sample and pick up some of the spendid local Red, Rosé and White Collioure wines produced on the mountain terraced vineyards.
Festivals: Collioure`s Good Friday procession of hooded penitents is about the richest this side of the Pyrenees. Altogether more joyous are Fetes de la St-Vincent ( 14 - 18 August), celebrations in honour of the towns's patron saint, their highlight a spectacular firework display on the 16th.
Trips. In season, from April to October, a journey with spectacular views, on the little yellow train, through the vineyards. past the restored windmill and forts and over the hill to nearby Port Vendres is a must. Being close to the border with Spain, you are within a one hour drive or train journey to the famous Salvador Dali museum in Figueres, and you can be in the bustling city of Barcelona within two hours.
How to get there
Fly to Perpignan (30 mins away), Girona or Carcassone (1.5 hours away) from Stanstead, or from Ireland fly to either Girona or Carcassone (all by Ryanair). Aer Lingus also flies to Barcelona or Toulouse (2.5 hours). Car hire is easily available at each airport, or there is an excellent train and bus service from Perpignan to Collioure. A car is not necessary to enjoy Collioure, but there are many interesting places nearby to visit if you have one!
