The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

The area of Languedoc-Roussillon is a beautiful verdant region of Southern France , surrounded by the Pyrenees. The warm Mediterranean sea laps onto the beaches of Collioure & the sun shines for about 320 days of the year.
Collioure is steeped in history. The large medieval fortress in the centre of the town is built on a prehistoric site & the beautiful clock tower also has a long history. The little town has kept its old narrow streets & the fisherman still go out from the bays in search of Anchovies.
When the sun shines, the soft terracotta colours of the houses take on a special clarity in the unusually clear light. It is this unbelievable light that attracted painters such as Durain & Matisse to come & work in Collioure in the early part of the 20th century.

Collioure area

Perpignan is within easy reach & is a very attractive compact city. For those who enjoy shopping, there are some very attractive shops that are well worth a visit. Along the river are plenty of restaurants where you can enjoy the food & watch the world go by.
Drive into the Pyrennean foothills, enjoy some spectacular scenery & visit the stunning gorge on the way.
Argeles, just 3 miles away, has miles of sandy beaches, a lovely promenade walk that leads to the marina where you can sit & enjoy the views.
In Collioure, when it comes to restaurants, you are spoilt for choice. Sit in the old square underneath the plane trees, choose a table facing the bay or go in to one of the many little restaurants in the narrow medieval streets. They are all delightful.
A well as swimming in the Collioure bays, there are boat trips available & deep sea diving. These are all popular.
Take a breathtaking ride in the 'Petit Train', up into the hills & over to Port Vendre, a pretty town dominated by its port, just 3 miles away.
Take advantage of the hills surrounding Collioure & walk up past the windmill to the 'castle in the sky'. The views of the sea & hills is spectacular
