The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
It is on the South West corner of the Mediterranean coastline of France. The wine of the region is world renowned. It benefits from higher than average hours of sunshine throughout the year and locals will tell you that only 10 days rainfall occur each year.
Collioure / Faubourg area
Collioure is a small pretty fishing town on the Mediterranean coast of France in the Catalan region. It is less than 30 minutes drive from the Spanish border.
It has the Mediterranean coastline at the front of the town and is backed by vineyards that form the foothills of the Pyrenees mountain range.
The region is well known for it’s wine and the local vineyards operate co-operatives for selling and distribution of the wines. There are plenty of outlets in and around Collioure that allow you to buy and taste the wines of the area.
Collioure is also well known for it’s anchovies and anchovy fishing boats can still be seen moored around the harbour of the town. Again there are lots of oppurtunities to buy local anchovies in and around the town.
The views of the coastline and town inspired artists through the ages and Matisse and Derain immortalised it in their canvasses. A special route through the town has been waymarked that passes some of the views that Matisse and Derain painted. The route is called Chemin de Fauvisme and all the sites are indicated by the reproduction of the painting on a panel relevant to the site.
The sea front of Collioure is dominated by fortified church which is so near to the water’s edge it appears to actually be in the sea. This church is Eglise Notre- Dame des Anges and was built in the 17th Century. It’s distinctive pink domed tower used to be the lighthouse for the old port. The interior of the church belies it’s somewhat plain exterior since it houses 9 ornate wooden carved and gilded altarpieces, that are well worth visiting.
The other imposing building towering over the promenade is the Chateau Royal. This building is built on a former Roman site. It was founded by the Templars in the 12th Century and became the summer home for the kings of Majorca in the 13th and 14th Century. Nowadays it is given over to tourism and summertime exhibitions.
There are 5 small and safe beaches in Collioure. There are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants both at the edge of the beaches and on the quaint winding streets, although those people looking for a lively nightlife should look elsewhere since Collioure does not have a wild night life despite having a night club and casino.
The pretty, narrow streets of the town house a surprising number and variety of small shops that sell everything from holiday momentoes to everyday comestibles and great works of art.
Like any holiday destination there are plenty of things to see and do outside Collioure itself.
The tourist information office in the town will be able to provide you with brochures and more detailed information of things to do and see but a sample of what’s available is:
