The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
One of France’s best kept secrets, Languedoc-Roussillon, is a region of contrasts that stretches from the slopes of the Massif Central south to the towering Pyrenees, encompasses the fertile plain of Roussillon and reaches eastwards to the mouth of the Rhone, with a long stretch of Mediterranean coastline that runs from the Spanish border right round to the Camargue with some of the finest sandy beaches in all France.
Collioure, on the Cote Vermeille, lies in the Roussillon, France’s most southerly area, characterised by vineyards, orchards, timeless villages and vibrant towns all nestling beneath the peaks of the Canigou, the sacred mountain of the Catalans. This is a land of sunshine - over 300 days a year; wine - with some excellent local vintages and good food – a blending of French and Spanish influences that have been influenced by its Catalan and Occitan cultures. A holiday in Collioure will enable you to experience all this and much more………..
Collioure area
COLLIOURE is one of the very special places, often described as the ‘jewel of the Cote Vermeille’, the historic port has a wonderful natural setting on two bays with their various beaches, which are encircled by vine clad hills as they plunge into the sparkling Mediterranean. The importance of the setting was recognised by visiting ancient Greeks and Phoenicians who set up the original port and from then on the town has always attracted visitors, be they merchants or invaders, or today the 21st century holiday maker. However, in the early 1900’s it was invaders of a different type who really put Collioure on the map and established it as a major art centre. Attracted by the setting and the wonderful clear light a group of painters – including Matisse and Derain – the Fauvists, made Collioure their summer base and today you can follow their Chemin de Fauvisme.
The town is still dominated by the impressive fortified Chateau Royal, built by the Templars in the 12th century, it became the sometime residence of the Kings of Mallorca and Aragon, and was developed further by Vauban in the 17th century. To the north is the Mouré, or old town, whose narrow streets are lined with pastel tinted houses, restaurants, bars and shops that tumble down to the Boramar beach, which used to be the centre of the anchovy industry. Some of the boats and the anchovy factories are still there today. At the end of the beach is one of Collioure’s most famous landmarks – the Clocher – the 17th century bell tower of the church of the Notre Dames des Anges, originally built as a lighthouse, but now a part of the ‘church in the sea’.
To the south of the Chateau is the newer area, the Fauborg, which is fronted by a tree lined promenade which leads to the Cave of the Dominicans where you can deguste some of the excellent AOC wines of Collioure and Banyuls, the Musee d’Art Moderne and climb up through the Pams gardens to the windmill, still producing olive oil, that overlooks the town and follow the route up through the vines to the fairy-tale 16th century Fort St Elme, which has fantastic views over the town and the plain of Roussillon.
Collioure is a resort for all seasons and along with the many beaches offering a wide choice of water sports, numerous restaurants serving varied cuisines, atmospheric bars, shops and boutiques, art galleries and the normal holiday pursuits, there is invariably something going on in the town be it a local festival, a concert, boules tournament or the local Catalan sardanas and coblas. There are many festivals in Collioure throughout the year as well as concerts, dances, theatre and exhibitions.
Above all, Collioure can be enjoyed just by walking around the town, visiting the bustling market on a Wednesday and Sunday, swimming from one of the many beaches, taking a boat trip along the coast, riding the 'petit train' up into the hills and vineyards, or relaxing in a waterfront restaurant just enjoying the scenery.
In addition there is plenty to see and do in the local vicinity, places such as:
PERPIGNAN – 30 kms to the north of Collioure, is the capital and largest town of the Roussillon. The city’s medieval walls were demolished early in the 19th century and replaced by wide boulevards, shaded by plane trees. The medieval city is well worth exploring on foot, especially the Palais des Rois de Majorque and the Cathedrale Saint Jean both dating from the 13th century. Perpignan offers excellent shopping, a wide range of restaurants and a chance to experience at first hand the passion of Catalan rugby at the Aime Giral stadium.
ARGELES sur MER- 7 kms north of Collioure, comprises Argeles Ville, with a good range of shops and supermarkets and the more modern and bustling resort of Argeles Plage, with its long sandy beaches. There is a marina to the south of the beach area, en route to the more intimate resort of Le RACOU which has a fine sand beach with beach front hotels and restaurants.
To the south PORT VENDRES, a working fishing port with a busy harbour surrounded by a good selection of fish restaurants, cafes and bars, BANYULS sur MER, a traditional seaside resort, nestling amongst vineyards, overlooking a sweeping bay with a long seafront with an aquarium, a good selection of restaurants, bars and beach. The town is famous for its Banyuls aperitif and dessert wines, and some of the larger cellars are well worth a visit for a degustation. CERBERE, originally a border town and a major railway centre on the way to Spain.
CERET- west of Collioure in the Tech valley, is famed for its early Spring which brings the first cherries. In summer Ceret holds sardanas and corridas, but many visitors are drawn by The Museum of Modern Art which features work by the most well known Fauvists, Cubists and Surrealists. Much of the collection was donated by artists who came to stay in the town. The weekly market is also worth visiting. Further up the Tech Valley are the spa town of AMELIE les BAINS, ARLES sur TECH and after a beautiful drive the historic old frontier town of PRATS de MOLLO.
CASTELNOU – north west of Collioure, is a picturesque stone village that clusters on the hillside beneath the ruins of a 10th century chateau. Castelnou is famous for its cargolade - grilled snails!
Another worthwhile day out, either by car or the Petit Train Jeune, is to follow the Tet valley from Perpignan into the Pyrenees, visiting en route PRADES, home of the Casals music festival, the historic town of VILLEFRANCHE de CONFLENT and MONT LOUIS, two of the best examples of Vauban’s work in the region, (both nominated as UNESCO heritage sites in 2007), before reaching the skiing resort of FONT ROMEU.
SPANISH CATALONIA - the border is under 30 minutes drive south and offers an interesting day out, dramatic sea views and a completely different culture. The northern area of the Costa Brava has a number of delightful small resorts like Llafranc, Calella de Palafrugel and Tamariu - perfect for a walk or swim and a leisurely lunch. Figueres, home of the Dali Museum; Cadaques and Port Lligat where Dali spent much of his life and further afield the historic town of Gerona and the vibrant city of Barcelona are also within easy reach.

Just a quick email to thank you for returning our deposit cheque so promptly. We enjoyed staying in your apartment and Collioure and the surrounding area. You seem to have thought of everything a temporary resident needs! The weather wasn’t hot and sunny except for short periods, but that’s what we get here for a good part of the year, so it didn’t curtail our activities at all.
Thanks again, H.
Hello again. We are back after a nice vacation in France. We enjoyed Collioure very much, the weather was changing, but we had a great week there. We rented a car the last days and visited among others Villefrance, Le Perthur and Castelnou (very impressing). We found a map in the apartment and it guided us from Collioure up to Tour de Madeloc (along the edge from north). A very nice walk. Thank you for renting us a nice apartment. Maybe we will contact you once again. Regards TC. May 2008.
Dear Linda,
We have just spent a very enjoyable week at your flat. Thank you. We found it very well equipped comfortable and attractive. As someone who has enjoyed studying History of Art over the years at Birkbeck College as a diversion from teaching, I enjoyed the sympathetic decor! And of course I knew of Collioure altho' had never visited it before.
Madeleine and your arrangements are working well it would seem. We didn't need help but knew she would have been helpful if we had. We enjoyed 4 days of sunshine and especially liked the fact that the flat faced east so we could enjoy the morning sun.
Would you also keep us on your files as being interested in booking the flat again next year at a similar time or in late May.
Thank you again. With our good wishes. J - April 2008
Hi Linda We really enjoyed the apartment and area. Thanks for your help. J & D - March 2008
John / Linda We had a great time in Collioure. Just an e.mail to say thanks and that we really enjoyed it, its just a shame that allthough the weather was still good everywhere was closing down, next time we will go earlier in the year. Any way thanks again we will pass on your e.mail address .......................... Kind Regards C & J - October 2007
Dear John & Linda,
Thank you for providing a magnificent retreat in a fabulous location. We have had a wonderful time - we would recommend your apartment to everyone.
Merci beaucoup et bon Vacances, Salut D. A. & K. - August 2007
Hi Linda
We have just returned to the (wet) UK. What a comedown. We had a truly wonderful time and your apartment was just perfect. Collioure was wonderful, although very busy, and I understand that there was some sort of long weekend break for the French and I think they all came to Collioure. We found it better to go into Port Vendres to eat in the evening as it was much easier to park and we went to a wonderful fish restaurant (3 times). The journey back was OK and we found accommodation with no problem (Etap and Campanile). The weather took a turn for the worse on Thursday night with violent thunderstorms whilst we were in Epernay but we ate in the hotel so did not get too wet. All in all we had a wonderful holiday and was able to drive around most of the time with the roof down on the car. It is so easy to drive in France particularly with the help of sat.nav which we did not have last time. It saved a few arguments I can tell you as I did not have to try and navigate and get us lost. Anyway, thanks again for letting us have your wonderful apartment. If we go back to the area, we would certainly like to stay there again.
Regards GD - May 2007 .............................. Dear Linda We had a lovely time, thank you. Your apartment is delightful and the walk to the town from it is fantastic (with access via the back gate of course!) It's a lovely area and very friendly. I hope you have good bookings for the summer, I am sure you do. Thank you for the deposit return, I will confirm receipt when it arrives. I am very happy to recommend your apartment and thank you for making all the arrangements so easy. It's been a pleasure.
Kind regards, PD - May 2007 ........................... Just a little note to say thanks ever so much for all your help and everything that you did to make our stay in Collioure so wonderful. The apartment was a delight and Collioure is a charming place with lots of friendly people.
LH - May 2007 .......................... Thank you, we did enjoy our stay - your apartment is great and your taste on décor very pleasing, the bed size was brilliant. Collioure is amazing and we will return. Directions were useful but we did get lost around Rouen - took wrong turn etc etc - but way back was easier. Bourges was also very interesting, although again took a wrong turning to the Ibis, but fine on the way back.
Best regards
