The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

The luscious Languedoc-Rousillon region of France, hovering near Spain and dotted by the Pyrenees Mountains, is sun-kissed and delightful. It features great beaches, quaint Medieval villages and outdoor recreation. The wineries here produce robust varieties with cheap price-tags. Since the region is relatively undiscovered, the prices are low.
As written by the Independent (17 June 2007):
"Languedoc literally means "language of yes" – langue d'oc – but obviously something goes missing in translation. "Oc" was how the Occitan-speaking inhabitants of this part of south-west France said "yes", as opposed to northerners who said "oïl". Now, everyone says "oui" – apart from Catalan speakers in the southern province of Roussillon, who say "si", just to confuse things further.
But then, who would expect anything straightforward about a region that is filled with extraordinary riches and has such a complicated history? Languedoc-Roussillon has always been more down-to-earth than its eastern neighbour, and this is reflected in a landscape that ranges from rugged mountains to vine-covered hills and plains, down to its vast coast. Its turbulent history has seen religious persecution, farmers' revolts and an attempt to eradicate the Occitan language.
Yet it's also home to one of France's most dynamic cities, Montpellier, which has the world's oldest continuously operating university. The Roman cities of Nîmes and Narbonne wear their long history comfortably while retaining a typically southern, relaxed ambience. Carcassonne combines its workaday lower town with the medieval Cité, which was practically a ruin until it was restored – some say too enthusiastically – in the 19th century. Yes, it's full of tourists, but even the shops selling tat can't destroy the evocative atmosphere.
Head further south, and you reach the capital of French Catalonia: Perpignan, one of the most pleasing cities in which to amble about. And then there's the seemingly endless coastline."
And this is were you find Collioure and Port Vendres.
The Collioure area
Collioure (by Wikipedia)
Collioure (French: Collioure, Catalan: Cotlliure ku?ˈ?iw??) is a seaside Mediterranean town and commune a few kilometers north of the Spanish border in the French département of Pyrénées-Orientales, a part of the ancient Roussillon province and the present-day Languedoc-Roussillon région. Collioure is also the name of a fine full bodied red wine produced here in one of the smallest AOC vineyards in France. The ancient terraced vines in the hills behind the town also provide tiny sunbaked grapes for the famous Banyuls (Banyuls AOC) aperitif and desert wine.
As the town has a strong Catalan culture, its own motto is the same as the one of the local Catalan rugby team (USA Perpignan, France) which is Sempre endavant, mai morirem (Always forward, We'll never die). Under Michel Moly's leadership, the town has an alternative motto, Collioure sera toujours Collioure (Collioure shall always be Collioure) quoting French singer Maurice Chevalier's famous song titled Paris sera toujours Paris.
Collioure is famous throughout France for its 3-day August 15th celebration, which attracts twice its population in visitors, who come to see the town's bodégas and fireworks.
Matisse and his family spent many summers in Collioure, with 1905 being the most notable. During this time he was joined by Derain, and together they produced 242 paintings, drawings and sculptures in and around the village. These works displayed such vibrant colours and brushstrokes that the artists were referred to as 'la cage aux Fauves' (wild beasts) and it is from these Collioure works that the new art movement, Fauvism, was formed.
Port Vendres is the only natural port along the rocky coast (called 'Côte Vermeille', because of the bright red colors of the rocks). It is both a deep-water commercial port and fishing and yachting harbour working all year round.
With its pebbled and sandy beaches and creeks, it offers every seaside leisure facilities. Set on the magnificent rocky slopes overlooking Port-Vendres are the prestigious vineyards of Banyuls, which also produce the Collioure appellation.
