The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

At the very Southern tip of Mediterranean France , Collioure is set where the Pyrenees meet the sea and and is a haven for artists. Discovered by Matisse and a retreat for artists such as Picasso and Derain, the old town retains delightful narrow pedestrian streets within city walls, and lies in a beautiful picturesque bay .
The area is surrounded by terraced vineyards and there is a wonderful supply of local wines!
The beaches are sheltered and safe, and there are wide sandy beaches stretching from Argeles to Perpignan and beyond. (For the less energetic, you can park on the beach at Le Racou, just a short trip down the road to Argeles!)
The Collioure area
A really beautiful historic town with a sheltered beach overlooked by beach cafes and artists displays.
Market day is Sunday and again on Wednesday.
The " Petit Train" leaves hourly from the harbour and takes you on a magical trip around the town and up through the vineyards to the fort from where there are the most wonderful views. There are boat trips, boat hire and diving in the bay and wonderful walks both around the town and in the hills beyond.
Walking. For the walkers there re numerous places to go all with wonderful views of hill or sea or vineyards. For a gentle stroll which takes about 15 minutes from the house, you can take in the fort which stands overlooking the sea to Argeles and beyond towards Perpignan. There are a series of paths here on the cliff top or making their way to the shore.
Travelling a little further to Rimau in the hills behind Colioure you can park the car and take one of the many marked trails through the woods or higher up to the hill top. There are books in the house describing these walks.
Golf
There is a golf course/Hotel/Spa at Saint Cyprian just a short drive towards Perpignan. Although completely flat there are challenges in the form of water! The Hotel has a very nice restaurant, there is a club house and proshop. The course is very close to Canet Plage an enormous stretch of unspoilt beach.
Travelling further afield Falgos golf resort is set up on the hills of the Pyrenees and is rated by some as the best golf course in France. It certainly must be one of the most beautiful, and challenging.
Tennis. The local tennis courts are just a few hundred yards up the road.
Dining out.
There are lots of places in Collioure to eat out, but for a special occasion we would recommend the Cote Vermeille in Port Vendres or if you prefer to walk, the Amphytron on the beach in Collioure is worth a visit. This is one of our favourites.

We've just come back from a wonderful two weeks holiday renting this holiday home in the stunning town of Collioure. Our kids are aged 7, 4 and 20 months and the property was absolutely ideal for us (our 7 & 4 year old slept in seperate beds in 1 bedroom, our 20 month old slept in a cot bed provided (nice & clean) at the end of our bed in the main bedroom. The house feels almost new (probably because it is) - very bright and clean and well stocked with all the bits and pieces you need when holidaying on a self catering basis. There's also a little garden out the back which was ideal for the children to play in safely. The bedrooms upstairs have a balcony outside (so you can move from one bedroom to the other via the balcony) with beautiful views over Collioure and the bay in front of you and the Pyranees over to the right. There's a satellite TV system provided + DVD player so our children were happy that they could catch up with kids TV and watch their DVD's when time permitted. The walk in to town (even with 3 children) took less than 10 minutes and Collioure itself is really easy to walk around. The town is truly beautiful - everything that you read on the Internet. Plenty of restaurants, boutique shops, a weekly market and an all round general good buzz and atmosphere. We'd definately recommend this property and also Collioure as a great place to stay and visit. Eileen (owner) was extremely helpful in answering all our questions pre us going - so thanks all round - we'll definately be returning. |

Wow, that was great, thanks for letting us share your delightful home. We loved the area, and enjoyed the short walk to the lovely old town. We flew to Girona as advised and it was really convenient (and cheap!)
