The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

Within the Languedoc-Roussillon district the Pyrenees-Orientales region, Collioure and the surroundings are also the Cote Vermeille coast. This is also Catalan.
Catalan region is not just a Spanish region. Over the centuries, the Spain - France border advanced and retreated many times until 1659 and a Spanish incursion in 1793 with the area around Collioure and the identity remaining Catalan. The language is French, many words and the local dialect differ, the rest is up to you to explore and decide.
Perpignan is the capital of the Pyrenees Oriental region and is the major commercial centre for the region.
Carcassonne is an ancient fortified town, built on a hill and is steeped in history and is also a UNESCO world heritage site.
Other places definitely worth a visit are Céret, Elne, Port Vendres, Banyuls sur Mer, Sete which are all on the French side of the border of the Catalan region.
In the Pyrenees mountains you can find the small Principality of Andorra, which is a tax free haven. Andorra has some fantastic winter sports and the route for getting there and back, has some very impressive scenery.
This is one of the oldest wine making regions with virtually every farm, village or château producing wine. There are ‘Caves’ - local wine produce outlets - in virtually every village and even by the roadside in between.
The Collioure area
The geography around Collioure has everything. Beaches, Mediterranean Sea, Bays and Natural harbours, beautiful hills and mountains.
The Beaches and the Mediterranean in this region offer something to meet the needs for every vacationer. Whether it be basking in the sun, swimming, diving, sailing, walking, cycling,… as energetic or as lazy as you like….. its all here.
For the fitter and those in touch with nature, the hills and mountains around have lots of small roads, tracks and paths to explore. There are some medieval villages, many small hamlets, abbeys, isolated monasteries and an untold number of vineyards.
At the centre of Collioure is the Château Royal, or the Summer Palace of the Kings of Majorca and Queens of Aragon, which is one of the towns dominating features. This Castle is also sometimes referred to as “Château des Templiers”, but in reality all the Knights Templar had was a house in the grounds. The area is steeped in History. From the earliest to modern times. As far back as the times when Phoenician Traders sailed the then known world, through the periods of the Crusades, the rise of the Templars, the edge of the Iberian peninsula being occupied by the Moors
The Collioure markets occur twice weekly, Sundays and Wednesdays with lots of local fresh produce, fruit and vegetables, cured meats and sausages, cheese stalls, crusty breads and the heavenly scent of racks of roasting chickens. Collioure is very much driven by the cycle of the wine year - vendanges, wine making, pruning, festivities. Sales of the local wines are from the many 'caves' in the village and the surrounding area. Collioure used to be an active and vibrant Fishing port- that has declined with modern fishing methods and mechanisations. Despite the decline in fish landing, the town has maintained its famed product with the “Anchois” or the famous Collioure Anchovies. The fish now mainly being landed at the next town, Port Vendres (a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive or bus) which is a working port and has very good and diverse fish market open all week at 'La Criee', effectively hidden at the end of the working port.
Across the border in Spain still within the Catalan region, as far south as Barcelona, you have the Costa Brava and all its towns. Barcelona is the economic heart of Spain and is also a fantastic historic city, rich in Art and Culture.
ART !! Salvador Dali, Andre Derain, Raoul Dufy, Augustin Hanicotte, Aristide Maillol, Matisse, Willy Mucha, Pablo Picasso, Braque, Balbino Giner, Henri Marre, Jean Peske, Juan Gris, Joseph Sunyer, George Braque, Charles Rene Mackintosh, to name drop but a few, Collioure and the surrounding area, has been, is and always will be an attraction to artists. It has played host to many of the greatest and most famous artists and sculptors. Its colours, light, textures have given centuries of artists inspiration.
Collioure Facts:-
Has an average of 320 days of sunshine per annum.
Has a resident population of 2,987 (2006)
