The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
Less commercial than the Riviera, more pictoresque than Provence, the Languedoc-Roussillon is the warmest region in France, enjoying over 300 days of sun per year. Although renown for its seafood and wine, beaches and landscape, the region has some of Europe's most stunning Romanesque art and architecture. The medieval castle of Carcasonne, the beautiful coastal village of Collioure, and the lively city of Perpignan, are just a few towns that reflect the varied nature of the region. Amongst the hills you will stumble across ancient ruins, along the coast charming villages and fishing ports - not to mention the miles of sandy beaches and clear, blue sea.
Collioure area
Collioure is France with a Catalan flavour. Only 20 minutes from the Pyrenees and the Spanish Border, It is a pictoresque costal village that has retained it’s amazing natural setting and colourful, ancient past. Its cobbled streets are full of cafés, restaurants, art galleries and boutiques. 3 beautiful beaches, hillside vineyards, the Château Royal and a world famous quality of light all contribute to Collioure’s reputation as the jewel of the coast. Days spent splashing in the Mediterranean, wandering through the tiny village streets, browsing the outdoor market or numerous art galleries, and sampling the delicious local food and wine are all part of the Collioure experience. Visit Cathar castles, Romanesque abbeys or take trips along the dramatic coast to villages like Port Vendre (fabulous fish market) or Banyuls sur Mer (where they make their own sweet wine.) Take a boat trip from Collioure to see secret coves, steeply terraced vineyards and the Pyrenees, tumbling into the sea. Its not far to Spain, the Costa Brava, Barcelona, or the famous Dali Museum in Figueras - only an hours drive away.

Guestbook for L'aquarelle
Having decided to go back to Collioure (after many years) for a week in June, I was happy when I found this apartment on the site as it just looked right. The hosts - Gary & Pascale - were extremely welcoming so even before I saw the apartment I had a good feeling. The apartment is on a nice street in the town/village centre - literally 2 minutes to the beach and a lovely walk past shops/art galleries...and most importantly good boulangeries. Once inside, the rooms feel spacious and very light - we kept the French windows open and had a lovely breeze even on hot days.
Off-season the town was just right - enough tourists to create buzz in the evenings, but not too crowded on the beaches and in the restaurants. The sea warmed up whilst we were there and was perfect for swimming even with a child. We're definitely keeping the address and planning our next trip sometime soon.
