The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

The Pyrenees-Orientales departement lies within the Languedoc-Roussillon region and bears a strong identity, remembering its past as part of the ancient kingdom of Catalonia.
The region is home both to the hilltop castles of the Cathar period and to the Mediterranean beaches ranging from Canet Plage near Perpignan to Banyuls-sur-Mer close to the border with Spain.
Nestled among the many valleys you'll find spectacular gorges, isolated abbeys and monasteries, not to mention untold numbers of medieval villages. Much of the region retains a Spanish influence from the long period under Spanish rule seen in its people and some of the not-quite-French local customs.
PERPIGNAN
Perpignan is the capital city of the region and the lofty splendour of the Palace of the Majorcan Kings dominates the narrow popular streets overflowing with spices, fruit or fish, a thousand different aromas from around the world. History is everywhere from the convents to the museums, from the chapels to the processions. Life is everywhere, in a sardane step, a harmony of jazz, the strumming of a gypsy on his guitar or an Arabic chant wafting from a window.
In Perpignan it is said that to live in the present is at every instant, to unite both here and there, as well as today and tomorrow.
CARCASSONNE
The presence of history in Carcassone is impressive. Founded over 2.000 years ago and built on its present plan in the 13th century, it is one of the most remarkable sites surviving from the Middle Ages. It is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Aude and Canal du Midi separate the "lower town" from the medieval city built in the 13th century and restored in the 19th century by Viollet le Duc.
Carcassone is where Cinderella lost her glass slipper, Beauty nursed the Beast, and Jack's giant lived a happy life until that whole beanstalk affair. Round towers capped by red tile roofs and an undulating double wall guard the approach to the city. As you walk through the stone portals, the ramparts still seem to resound with the clinking of armour and sharpening of steel.
As one of France’s top tourist attractions, Carcassonne should not be missed. In the evening, when the streets are clear of crowds and the floodlit fortress echoes with free animations and concerts.
Special dates to visit Carcassone: Festival in July (dance, theatre, music); on 14th July, "embrasement de la Cite" (huge firework show); in August, les Medievales (knights and chivalry tournaments, historical reconstitutions and concerts).
Other towns that are certainly worth a visit include Ceret, Castelnou, Elne, Port Vendres, Eus and Banyuls sur Mer (all in France) and Cadaques and Figueres (both across the border in Spain). Barcelona is under 2 hours away and closer by are the multiple (and varied) beaches of the Costa Brava.
The Collioure area
Collioure is a medieval harbour town, whose charm and glorious views have long attracted artists to visit and commit to canvas their images of colour. Amongst many others, Matisse, Picasso, Dali, Derain and Rennie MacIntosh have discovered the inspirational qualities.
Its many attractions include Le Chateau Royal (the summer residence of the Majorcan Kings in the 13th and 14th centuries); L'Eglise Notre Dame des Anges (the 17th century church with the highly distinctive bell tower), Le Musée d'Art Moderne de Collioure, Le Chemin de Fauvisme (celebrating city views painted by Matisse and Derain) and L'Eglise de L'ancien couvent ded Dominicains (which now houses the local wine cooperative).
However, Collioure is so much more than a series of breathtaking postcard images and historical buildings. It has plenty to offer on the restaurant front, specialising in a multitude of fresh fish dishes and there are many beachfront and side street cafes from where you can watch the world go leisurely by.
An outdoor market is held every Wednesday and Sunday from 9am to noon and offers a variety of regional foods, crafts, clothing and flowers. Music, festivals and performances abound throughout the year (listed on http://www.collioure.com.au/festivals.htm) with the highlight being the Festival of St. Vincent (or Festa Major de Collioure) from 14th to 18th August is the village's main festival and has been part of annual events since 1701. It is now well-known with visitors from all over Europe descending on the village during festival week. Many camp on the hills behind just to see the fireworks spectacular on 16 August. Other activities include a bullfight, competitions on the water, troupes of dancers, concerts and street music.
Sports enthusiasts will discover that Collioure provides a great base for trying a wide variety of activities, including swimming, hiking, horse-riding, golf, tennis and cycling. For those that enjoy mountain sports, climbing, canoeing and skiing are all on hand.
