The Collioure / Faubourg area
You can walk everywhere in town - cafes, restaurants, shopping, beachs, vineyards - from the house. Collioure is famous for it's amazing beauty, charming ambiance, artists and delicious wines. It is the birth place of the painting style of "Fauvism", and in fact, Henri Matisse did a painting of our street - rue du Soleil. There are 5 little beaches and swimming in the Mediterranean is a heavenly experience - the water feels like liquid silk on your skin. There are numerous summer festivals, performances and activities. The town is divided by the grand "Chateau Royale", with a promenade along the sea front, to go from the old town ("centre ville") to the more residential Faubourg. You can also take the train from Collioure to anywhere - Perpignan is 20 minutes away. This is "Catalan" country and the lifestyle is easy and casual.

We (my wife, daughter and I) spent here a one week wonderful holiday during July 28 - Aug 4. Everything (really everything) was great: cozy apartment, service and environment in the city: people,... more |

There are scores of rentals in Collioure, and we probably looked at all of them. We picked 22 Rue du Soleil based on its amenities: wi-fi, clothes washer, dishwasher, terrace, balcony...which seemed like an impossible list. What we got was much, much more. Being Americans, we prefer older buildings as nothing is very old back home. In Collioure there are many old buildings for rent, but not many with a spectacular view of Fort St. Elme and the windmill, and a great deal of light and sky. Also, everything works. There's a new Ikea kitchen with all the amenities (including the dishwasher we like), and for those Scandinavian appliances that might confuse, instruction manuals in English. There's a huge water heater, a large bathtub, and separate heaters in every room. The wi-fi is reliable and fast. Finally, the location. It's a two-minute walk to the sandy beach, a few cafes, a baker. a grocer and a good wine store. The old historic town is five minutes past that. The street is not a main thoroughfare, but there is just enough activity that you know you are in a real neighborhood, and a friendly one. It's quiet, and all we hear are birds and the occasional susurration of a train. Laurie Lalena Vann is a delight. She met us at the train and gave us a thorough introduction to the house before we took over, and we've found that she's well loved throughout the community. We're staying here a month, and it's an honor. Visit our blog of the trip at http://april-in-france.tumblr.com/. |
