The Lombardy / Lake Como Area
Lake Como is the third largest lake in Northern Italy and is shaped like an inverted "Y" and covers an area of over 146 sq. kilometers. At over 400m deep it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe with the bottom of the lake being more than 200m below sea level.
The lake provides stunning scenery with the blue of the lake contrasting with all the shades of green in the surrounding mountains. The area is blessed with a mild climate, never getting too hot in summer and sheltered by the mountains in winter yet still near to the Alps for mountain skiing.
The area is renowned for its attractive water side villas and is a favourite for celebrities.
The lake is perfect for water sports, with every conceivable activity on offer, and also for the really adventurous there are numerous mountain sports from mountain climbing to skiing.
Colico area
Colico is known as the pearl of the upper lake, being the last town on the eastern coast of Lake Como. It is a small pretty town,at the foothills of Monte Legnone, borders on the largest nature reserve of Lombardy "Colli di Montecchio".
The main street of the town has numerous pretty bars and restaurants, with everything you would need for an enjoyable and relaxing holiday.
How to get there
The best airports to access the beautiful lake Como area are the airports of Milan which include Linate, Malpensa , Bergamo and Orio al Serio.
To reach Lake Como you can take the train from Milan Central station, which takes approximately one hour. To reach the east side of the lake, which is approximately 60km from Milan, take the SS36 (Superstrada Nuova Valsassina) from Monza, driving always straight on from Viale Zara – Viale Fulvio Testi, and in less than an hour you are at Lecco. The SS36, then leads you to Sondrio, with different exits for the main villages on the east coast.
UK Flights: Ryanair has flights to Milan from London, Liverpool, Nottingham, Manchester, Newcastle,Bristol and Glasgow. Easyjet has flights from Bristol and Edinburgh. Flybe has flights from Birmingham and Manchester and Jet2.com has flights from Leeds
Ireland Flights: Ryanair flies from Dublin and Shannon and Aer Lingus has flights from Dublin.
