The Scottish Borders region

The Scottish Borders cover an area of about 1800 square miles, stretching from rolling hills and moorland in the west, through gentle valleys to the agricultural plains of the east, and on to the rocky Berwickshire coast with secluded coves and pretty fishing villages.
Westmost Cottage is within easy reach of Edinburgh, the vibrant, cosmopolitan capital of Scotland. A regular train service operates from Berwick railway station a short drive away. Alternatively, you can drive directly to Edinburgh in less than an hour.
The Coldstream area
Westmost Cottage is situated in Coldstream, an attractive small town located on the river Tweed which is the natural boundary between Scotland and England, and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the Borders. Because of this location, Coldstream, known as "the first true border toon", once rivalled Gretna for runaway marriages. The old Marriage House, located just on the Scottish side of the border, is still used for weddings and civil partnerships. The town is best known as the birthplace of the Coldstream Guards.
Coldstream has a wide variety of shops, including a Co-op supermarket, post office, newsagents, pharmacy and several hairdressers.
On the western outskirts of the town, a few minutes by car or 20 minutes on foot from Westmost Cottage, is the lovely Hirsel Estate, seat of the Earls of Home. Although the house itself is not open to the public, there is plenty to see and do with country walks, craft centre, children's play area and a tearoom. Dundock Woods, in the grounds of the Hirsel, is well known for its beautiful spring displays of rhododendrons and azaleas.

The cottage has everything you need and more. It is furnished with excellent quality furniture and beautiful extra home furnishing touches. It is really convenient being close enough to walk in to Coldstream and there are many short walks you can do from the house. We explored the whole region from there - up to Edinburgh and down to Alnwick. Thank you - all of us had a great stay. |
