The Scottish Borders is a beautiful unspoilt coastal and inland area with a wealth of outdoor activities, places of interest and good food on offer! Travel is relatively easy with less traffic and whether exploring the coast or the hills by foot, driving through Border Towns along the Tweed Valley or popping into Edinburgh for the day, the pace of life is relaxing.
The Coldingham area
Situated eight miles north of the border with England, the village of Coldingham lies between St Abbs with its towering cliffs and pretty harbour and the active fishing port of Eyemouth. The village offers local pubs & shops with an hourly bus service into Berwick or north to Edinburgh.
The cottage is one minute's walk from historic Coldingham Priory. There has been a religious presence on this site since c.643, through King Edgar's Charter to Durham in 1098, Cromwell's siege in 1648 and finally restoration in 1854. This is just a taste of the many period Houses, Abbeys and places of historical interest throughout the Border's towns and villages such as Kelso or Melrose, or further south to Alnwick or Holy Island.
Three miles from the center of Coldingham is St Abbs Head, an beautiful area of wild clifftop owned by the National Trust St Abbs is also a major centre for diving, with the clear waters around the harbour providing some of the best dives on the east coast. There is a diving center and school at Scoutscroft in Coldingham, offering courses and other services. At Coldingham Bay you can hire Surfing Kit or a boogie Board and book a lesson. There is also a great selection of golf courses, riding stables, fishing and many other outdoor activities.
The area is full of small galleries and craft shops. The Maltings in Berwick offers a great selection of Films, Theatre and Comedy. Additionally there are may events that take place throughout the year.

The cottage was warm, cosy and well equipped. It includes internet access and a selection of films & books as well as lots of leaflets on places to visit. There are plenty of local walks and the coastline is stunning. We had a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable week. Great location to base a holiday in the Scottish Borders. |
