The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast region
Some of the country's most impressive architecture, historical and religious sites can be found in this region in Central Portugal. The coast line stretches some 200 km with nearly empty beaches mixed with quaint fishing towns and villages. Inland one finds rich fertile countryside producing crops such as grapes, fruit and rice.
Regional food in this area is richly varied; from the eel stew of the coast to the inland's roasted suckling pig.
Coimbra / Vila Nova de Poiares area
Coimbra, the birthplace of six kings and the seat of the country's oldest university, offers plenty of activities for all ages. History and architectural buffs will be captivated. A trip to Conimbriga, the largest Roman excavation site, makes a fascinating trip.
Coimbra's old down town area has a maze of cobbled lanes with many shops, restaurants, bars and daily market. Also Coimbra has three ultra modern shopping centre offering top notch shopping and a wide array of other activities. Coimbra is located on the banks of the Mondego River so there are boat rides, canoeing, fishing and many restaurant/bars spotted along its' banks. The home is located approximately 20 km from Coimbra.
The home is also only five minutes drive to VN Poiares and ten minutes to Lousa both having weekly markets, restaurants, shops, clinics, banks, etc.
The whole area has stunning mountainous scenery with forests of pine and eucalyptus. Plenty of outdoor activities from canoeing, go karting, horse riding, ten pin bowling, hikes, river beaches, off roading.
18 hole golf course located in Viseu (about 45 minute drive) and a 9 hole in Coimbra., VN de Poiares in process of constructing an 18 holer. Many local bars and restaurants and during the summer months each village holds its local fiesta...

We recommend that a car be hired from the airport, but there is good rail service from both Lisbon and Oporto Airports to Coimbra.
