The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast region
Stretching from Lisbon to Fiqueira da Foz, Portugal’s Costa de Prata (Silver Coast) is a gem of largely undiscovered beauty and gets its name from the effect of the sun on the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike its more famous and populous cousin in the south of the country here you can discover pretty villages and a real Portuguese way-of-life amongst stunning coastal scenery fringed with the best beaches in Europe. Because much of this area of Portugal remains undiscovered by the mass tourism market you can guarantee a beach to yourself even in the height of the season if you are prepared to drive and walk a little way.
Coimbra / Vila Nova de Poiares area
Coimbra - One of Europe's oldest university towns, it has kept its secular academic traditions, as seen in the black caped students, in the soulful tones of the fado and in the Burning of the Ribbons (Queima das Fitas). Overlooking the city is the University, with its famous tower and a sumptuous Baroque library. In the adjacent quarters you will find the Old Cathedral (Romanesque) and the Machado de Castro Museum, with its Roman crypto portico. In the ancient streets, with their medieval walls, arches and stairways, are the Santa Cruz Monastery (founded in 1131), the Church of Santiago and the Monastery of Celas (13th century). On the other bank of the Mondego stands the Santa Clara-a-Nova Convent (Baroque, 17th century).
Vila Nova de Poiares is a small market town which has all the shops and amenities that you will require during your stay. River beaches are close by enabling canoeing , fishing and swimming .
A large range of budget airlines service Lisbon and Porto airports, these include: BA, Thomson Fly, BMI Baby, Easyjet, Ryan Air.
We recommend you rent a car in Lisbon or Porto and travel via auto to the Coimbra area. There are many car hire companies in the area which offer a range of vehicles to suit every budget. Car hire companies include: Alamo, hertz, e-sixt and avis.

Self Contained air conditioned apartment comprising of on-suite double bedroom , lounge with DVD/Video player , English satelite TV and separate kitchen . A travel cot is available if required. Full use of private swimming pool , BBQ area and courtyard lounge . All linen and towels provided , including pool towels . Central Heating in Winter Months. We could also accommodate extra people in a twin bedded ( 3/4 size beds ) en-suite room in our main house.
Further details outdoors: Eucalyptus and pine woods surround the property , making it ideal for walkers & bird watches . Local facilities in Vila Nova de Poiares include a go karting track , ten pin bowling allley , restaurants, post office ,shops and banks. Market day is on a Monday. Coimbra is a superb shopping area which mixes modern shopping centres with the old traditional Portuguese shops. It has many churches and is the home to the University. Luso is a nearby spa town where you can relax with a massage .
