A dreamy place in which to escape the world. All you are likely to hear are birdsong and the gentle rush of the cascades. This is a forgotten Eden - lovely hilly countryside; rivers and lakes (almost tropically warm in summer) which are great for swimming; quaint towns and villages; historic sites; magnificent sandy beaches; absurdly cheap restaurants; empty roads; amazingly friendly locals. You'll return wondering why it isn't better known, but very glad it isn't!
Cosy and well equipped. Downstairs is the open plan fitted kitchen and sitting area, with log fire. Books and games. Off this is a bedroom with adult bunk beds. Upstairs is the main bedroom with balcony and magnificent views. Next to it is the luxury shower room.

Water for the pool (exclusive to the cottage) passes from a spring through 600 mtrs of black piping in the full sun. The view from the 'infinity' side of the pool is breathtaking. The owners reserve the right to use the pool in the absence of guests. There's also a Japanese-style soaking tub (hot and cold running water) in a private walled garden. The fantasy gardens (over one acre) are a delight: lots of cascades; a pond; big rocks; little terraces; winding paths; exotic trees and plants; statues and ornaments; petanque court. Four mountain bikes free of charge. Great walks all around.

The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region
Some of the most diverse countrsyide anywhere in Europe. From the high mountains (with ski slopes) in the east, through lush rolling hills to the flat lagoon lands of the coastal strip in the west, you can "visit" Austria, Scotland, Tuscany, France, Greece and Florida! The rivers and lakes are normally crystal clear and great for swimming. Visit historic towns like Tomar, or the old ruined Roman capital of Conimbriga, with some of Europe's finest mosaics. Romp about on acres of golden sands, all to yourself (even in summer). And Portugal has Europe's most benign winter climate, so why not treat yourself to a very inexpensive spring break?
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BEACH WHICH IS 7KM FROM THE HOUSE IS A RIVER BEACH. THE SEA IS A LITTLE OVER ONE HOUR BY CAR.. WE SUGGEST THAT THE RIVERS AND LAKES ARE FAR SUPERIOR FOR BATHING, BEING MUCH WARMER, WITHOUT WAVES, CURRENTS AND SALT.
The Coimbra area
Coimbra is the local capital and Portugal's third city. In a lovely riverside setting, it is built around its medieval university. The student population ensures that it is always lively, yet it remains curiously laid back. Great shopping, winding streets, quiet little squares - rather like an Italian city. It is easiily reached from the cottage, by road or rail, and has excellent links to Porto and Lisbon.

My husband and I were in need of some serious relaxation and Casa da Cascata was perfect!! On arrival we found the owners had generously stocked up the fridge with all the essentials and even upon hearing it was my birthday gave us a lovely sparkling wine on top of the wine already provided. The pool was beautiful and refreshing and looked out over the stunning gardens and valley. We also used the japanese spa a few nights - this was very romantic with a bottle of portugese red looking up at the stars. We were so enamoured with Casa da Cascata, we ended up spending most of our time there and would definitely return again. If you are looking for a place to go that is relaxing, romantic, beautiful plus reasonably priced this is the place to go!! The owners are very friendly and hospitable as well as the Portugese people. You will not be disappointed I promise. |

wow, the house itself, the surroundings our hosts. Our week stay was a dream! The garden at night with all the terraces and lighting and fireflies and frogs! it was like a fairy tale. Lots and lots of things to do ( with help of the guide the owners made) during the day. Waterfalls, cities, swimming possibilities. Lovely! Definitely would recommend! |

We spent a most relaxing week here and were lucky to have wonderful weather. The villa is very comfortable and James and Heidi were the ideal hosts throughout. After a warm welcome, we were left to enjoy their comfortable and well equipped villa, swimming pool and grounds. The pool was cleaned very early each morning, before we were up, and from then on we were left in total privacy. However, when advice was sought, our hosts could not have been more helpful. We would commend this villa to anyone seeking peace and tranquility - you will not hear many man-made noises. We hardly left the premises for the duration of our time and when we did venture out, we found ourselves hurrying to the peace and quiet! You will definitely need a car for shopping, etc, and there are many historically interesting places in the area worth visiting. I believe there are some good river and lake swimming locations which James can recommend, but we found the pool at the villa perfect for our needs. In all, a great place to stay with the perfect, welcoming hosts. |
