About the home
We are Lin and Rob Bedenham and we have lived in Central Portugal for over 20 years, Casa Cleeve is in a beautiful, quiet rural village within easy reach of the ancient city of COIMBRA, which is full of old charm and character. This area is unspoilt by mass-tourism, and well worth a visit, to absorb the atmosphere and hospitality of the Portuguese people.
We welcome you to our new home and will do our utmost to help in any way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. We also respect your privacy and with this in mind, you have the exclusive use of an extensive lounge, breakfast room and large sun terrace.

Countryside walks are on our 'doorstep'.
River beaches are nearby and the coast is within a 40 minute drive.
The Montebelo Championship Golf Course in beautiful countryside is also a forty minute drive.

All areas are designed around the pool - French windows give access from guest bedroom and lounge.
The expansive lounge, dining area and terrace mean our guests can always find a perfect place to relax - out in the sun, or a quiet corner to read or snooze, away from the mid-day sun.

Our villa is on the edge of a village with a local shop and two cafes.
A restaurant is also opening towards the end of May, which is just approximately 300 meters away, so well within walking distance and will be ideal for an evening meal without having to drive. There is also a selection of reasonably priced restaurants within a short distance of Casa Cleeve, all serving local dishes with excellent wines.
Our local town is a few minutes drive away. Here are two large supermarkets, a Post Office, banks, a church, restaurants and many smaller shops. The local market is held on Mondays; here you can buy fresh country produce.
Vila Nova de Poiares also boasts a Ten Pin Bowling Alley and Bar with Nightclub and a Go Carting Track, also with Bar and Restaurant. There is a Tennis Court next to a stylish Park with water feature and cafe.

Share videoThe Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region
The Costa de Prata (Silver Coast) is just 38 kms to our west and perfect if you like semi-deserted sandy beaches. Some coastal towns still retain their fishing industry so a good fish lunch on this unspoilt Atlantic coast is a perfect way to spend a day. Many of the pretty villages along the Silver Coast have retained a traditional Portuguese culture and way-of-life.
Coimbra is the main city of this area and from there you can drive to some of Portugal's most impressive historical sights; the cathedrals around Batalha, Alcobaca and Fatima.
The Coimbra / Vila Nova de Poiares area
COIMBRA:
Coimbra is steeped in history: was home to Portugal's first university and was also Portugal's capital. Today it is a lively cosmopolitan town mixed with delightful whitewashed and azulejo covered houses piled on top of the hill, full of character and a great place to explore on foot !
CONIMBRIGA Roman Ruins:
Conimbriga is the best preserved Roman ruins in Portugal showing a variety of different ancient housing, baths, shops and many examples of mosaic flooring - you can still see the different colours used. Conimbriga is a fantastic site and not to be missed and only a 40 minute drive from Casa Cleeve so perfect for a morning or day trip.
LUSO & FOREST OF BUCACO:
Just 30 minutes from Casa Cleeve is Luso, a thermal spa town and the Bucaco Forest and palace - just 2 kms apart, so perfect for a full day trip. The vast forest is renowned as a spiritual, peaceful place popular with walkers, and the monastery and palace date back to the Portuguese royal family and the Napoleonic Wars, which swept across the Iberian Peninsular. There is a new luxury spa at Luso, well worth trying !
ANADIA & BAIRRADA WINE:
Anadia is a small town in the heart of the Bairrada wine growing region and also home to the region's wine museum.
CURIA SPA TOWN:
Curia is located in the heart of the Bairrada wine region and is famed for the healing properties of its thermal waters discovered by the Romans. The town's heyday was from the late 19th century through to the 'roaring 20s' and much of the architecture harks back to that time with examples of buildings from La Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau throughout the town. For the energetic there is a Golf Course nearby.
LOUSA - Outdoor Recreation:
Lousa is in the heart of several mountain ranges just 15 minutes from Casa Cleeve. The town is charming, with many old streets, an agricultural museum, and nearby rivers, mountains and woodlands which offer ample opportunities to get into the countryside. In summer months there is a unique fresh water swimming pool in the mountains.
PENACOVA - Watersports:
Penacova is a small hill town situated high above the River Mondego, overlooking lush countryside, with plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation including canoeing and rock climbing and mountain climbing. Easy access to an excellent river beach (praia fluvial).
CANTANHEDE:
Cantanhede is a small town renowned for its sparkling wines.

Budget Airlines fly from most European countries into Porto and Lisbon airports. The most popular are Ryanair, and Easyjet.
Scheduled flights include British Airways. KLM, TAP; all fly into Portugal.
We recommend that you hire a car from the airport and then take an easy drive, via the A1 Motorway, from either starting point. There are service stations to allow for comfort breaks, and after leaving the motorway, you will travel through pretty villages and stunning countryside.
Avis, Hertz, Alamo and other hire companies are available at the airports. We recommend pre-booking for best rates.
If you prefer a longer journey, Brittany Ferries run an all year service from Plymouth and Portsmouth to Santander in Northern Spain. It's usually less than a 24 hour crossing and then you can enjoy a 6 / 8 hour drive through Spain into Portugal and savour the experience - stop for coffee in a Spanish village and then lunch in a typical restaurant. This could all be part of your holiday!
