This part of France has loads to offer - you can switch off and enjoy the French way of life or you can go sightseeing and visit some of the historic towns located nearby such as Cognac, Jarnac, Angouleme, Saintes, La Rochelle or Jonzac. Alternatively explore the local countryside and discover the vineyards and chateaus of the region or maybe spend a day at the beach at St George de Didone, which is less than 60 mins away. During the summer months there are numerous rivers to explore, some with their own beaches to bathe in.
For evening entertainment there are lots of good local restaurants to whet your appetite (don't forget your glass of Pineau), bars to enjoy a drink or two and you don't need to look to hard to find a village festival to enjoy.
The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region

The Charente Maritime is renowned for its warm & sunny summers. It is a diverse region which includes beautiful beaches, islands, coastal ports and villages along with a diverse and scenic country more inland.
Inland you find a landscape dotted with vineyards, medieval towns and villages full of history and heritage. Must sees include La Rochelle, Ile de Re, Ile d'Oleron, Angouleme, Futurescope (Poitiers), La Palmyre (Zoo) and much more.
The Cognac area
Cognac and Jarnac (both only 10 mins away) are famous for the cognac and pineau distilleries such as Remy martin and Hennesay. These distilleries are open to the public. Try one of the Cognac routes and go and visit the Chateau's of the region and try some of the local brew or take a walk around these lovely old towns which are full of history and character.
Alternatively you can hire a boat or canoe and cruise the Charente river. Other activities include walking, cycling, fishing, golf, horse riding, tennis, water skiing and swimming (there are open air pools at both Cognac and Jarnac). We fully recommend swimming in the rivers, there are numerous delightful bathing areas, some with their own beaches! Or simply sample some of the culinary delights of the numerous local restaurants. Cognac hosts numerous festivals in the summer including a world renowned Blues Festival in early July (this year including ZZ Top, Jamie Cullum, Texas and Moby!).
The area is great for cycling and bikes are a great way to explore the area. There are two adult bikes and several children's bikes available for your use.
