The Charente Maritime is renowned for its warm & sunny summers. It is a diverse region which includes beautiful beaches, islands, coastal ports and villages along with a diverse and scenic country more inland.
Inland you find a landscape dotted with vineyards, medieval towns and villages full of history and heritage. Must sees include La Rochelle, Ile de Re, Ile d'Oleron, Angouleme, Futurescope (Poitiers), La Palmyre (Zoo) and much more.
The Cognac area
Cognac and Jarnac (both only 10 mins away) are famous for the cognac and pineau distilleries such as Remy martin and Hennesay. These distilleries are open to the public. Try one of the Cognac routes and go and visit the Chateau's of the region and try some of the local brew or take a walk around these lovely old towns which are full of history and character.
Alternatively you can hire a boat or canoe and cruise the Charente river. Other activities include walking, cycling, fishing, golf, horse riding, tennis, water skiing and swimming (there are open air pools at both Cognac and Jarnac). We fully recommend swimming in the rivers, there are numerous delightful bathing areas, some with their own beaches! Or simply sample some of the culinary delights of the numerous local restaurants. Cognac hosts numerous festivals in the summer including a world renowned Blues Festival in early July (this year including ZZ Top, Jamie Cullum, Texas and Moby!).
The area is great for cycling and bikes are a great way to explore the area. There are two adult bikes and several children's bikes available for your use.

We stayed here at the beginning of April for a weeks holiday and had a lovely time. The house is spacious, comfortable and nicely decorated /maintained. The weather was quite cold while we were there but the house was very cosy. There is a sunny courtyard at the front and you can close the gates to make it more private and keep small children off the road. The owners were very helpful and as we would be arriving late on easter saturday they even arranged for some provisions to be left for us. They also provided bikes for us. You do need a car (or bike!) as the house is in a small, quiet village, but it's not far to various shops. We travelled a bit further afield to visit places that would be of interest to the children (such as the Zoo at Royan) but when the weather is better I'm sure there will be more to do locally. There is a nice river beach at Chateuneuf-sur-Charente. |

We (2 adults and 1 child, aged 4) stayed at La Charente Grange for 1 week in late July. The house was very spacious and would comfortably sleep 6, even 8. It was clean, well maintained and had everything we could have wanted, there was even a cooler box, which we used just about every day. The telly also had all the freeview UK channels so my little one could happily watch CBBC in the mornings while we sorted ourselves out for the day. The house is wonderfully quiet, tucked away in a little village set in the countryside surrounded by vineyards and fields. It is a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside, however you must have a car. There are plenty of places to visit, either for a quite picnic and swim by the river or visiting some of the nearby towns. Cognac itself was only around 10-15 min drive away, we also visited Angouleme (comic book museum), went kyaking at Jarnac (around 10 minutes away) and spent a day at the seaside (Royan) which was around 1 hr away. There are lots of leaflets and booklets at the house giving information on places to visit. I would recommend this property to anyone who was looking for either a quite place to relax or a base for exploring the surrounding countryside and towns. |
