The Charente region has a micro-climate that makes it the second sunniest region in France. The countryside is beautiful: gentle rolling hills, vineyards and sunflower fields. The riverside town of Cognac is only a 15 minutes' drive while historic Saintes with its stunning Roman ampitheatre, is a further 30 minutes away. The walled capital of the Charente, the city of Angouleme, with the commanding Cathedral de St-Pierre, is a 30 minute drive. Futuroscope theme park is about an hour and a half away should you want a special day out for the family. The beautiful sandy beaches at Royan are only an hour's drive as is the old town of La Rochelle with its historic harbour and wonderful seafood restaurants.
Cognac / Segonzac area
Nearby Cognac is a charming town with lovely shops, bars and restaurants and a pretty central square with fountains. The river tour of the brandy distilleries is well worth trying. Segonzac, just 10 minutes' drive away, has an imposing church at its centre with restaurants and shops, a bank, post office, chemist and the all important supermarket for all your holiday supplies. There are tennis courts here and, a few miles away, at Jarnac, golf, bike and boat hire and many water sports including white water rafting. Chateauneuf-sur-Charente is about half an hour away and has a local market, including fresh fish, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Only ten minutes' walk from the house is the small village of Ambleville with a shop/ boulangerie while in La Roumade itself is a cognac house, selling brandy with the La Roumade label!

The house has oil fired central heating for the colder winter months. It has beautiful tiled floors which keep you cool in the summer months. We have some bathroom inprovements planned for this Winter. Please contact us for more deatils.

There is also a poolside toilet and a solar powered shower. The pool has an electronic sensor child alarm system. Guestbook
* Enjoyed our stay in this house very much. Will definitely come back! House is very private and provides tranquility throughout. Even though it is rather large, we enjoyed the house immensely. The kitchen is beautiful and fully equipped. Excellent beds, which is not always the case in France! The house is truly wonderful! MvdK The Netherlands, May 2008
* You have a lovely home at La Roumade! J.S. Watford, UK May 2008.
* Our week in La Roumade was a real treat as the weather allowed us to enjoy the large pool and surrounding gardens in the sunshine. A great base to explore the local area, but we found it hard to do much more than shop for our food and wine in a variety of markets. Lounging by the pool, great play space for the kids and dinner "al fresco" every night in a beautiful, well-equipped house. We recommend it all! C&T London, UK June 2008
* We loved our stay in La Roumade, It was wonderful because both children and adults enjoyed it equally. We hope that we will have the opportunity to visit the house again. The surrounding garden and the views over the vine-yards were beautiful and so peaceful. We appreciated the well equipped and functional kitchen.Especially our children, but also the adults, enjoyed the swimming pool a lot as the weather was sunny and beautiful every day. The small villages nearby were also lovely and we liked Cognac a lot. We also appreciated the "starter" provisions, including the wine. A.M. Finland. June 2008.
* We were really impressed with the cleanliness of the house and the amount of kitchen utensils/equipment etc. The beds were comfortable and the outside area worked really well. It was where we spent most of our time as the weather was great. It was lovely to have the crisps and biscuits, wine and beer on arrival. Very much appreciated as we had nothing and arrived late so everywhere was shut. It was also a lovely touch as in a welcoming gesture. Thanks so much, you have really thought of everything that guests could need. J.T. Hong Kong. June 2008.
* We loved it here! La Roumade is a perfect holiday retreat. Not only a beautifully maintained pool, gardens and terrrace(we ate every meal outside) and house, but - unusually in our experience - wonderful beds and a large well equipped kitchen. Walk to Boulangerie/shop and bar and use the car for lots of exploring in this lovely region. We lounged by the pool and went to restaurants and Cognac tastings. There is water skiing and windsurfing /sailing nearby. Beach an hour - but Ille d'Oleron beaches only 90 mins. We'll come again and have recommended it to our friends! K&D Surrey, UK. July 2008.
* We had a great time at your house and a fantastic holiday. It really is a lovely property in beautiful countryside with excellent facilities. T.L. Somerset, UK. August 2008.
