The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region
Segonzac is in the heart of the cognac grape growing region. There is a small supermarket (open on a Sunday morning) in the town, 2.5km from the property). Larger hypermarkets can be found on the outskirts of Cognac. The surrounding area is undulating and ideal for walks through the vines. Cognac houses abound throughout the area and visits can be arranged should you wish to sample, and possibly purchase, some of the excellent cognac produced in the area. Cognac old town is delightful. There are narrow, winding, cobbled streets to stroll around, perhaps finishing the tour with a picnic on the riverside. The Charente passes through Jarnac, just ten minutes away, where you can hire canoes or take a leisurely trip down the river. The coast is about an hour's drive away, as is Aubeterre with its amazing monolithic church and the vineyards of St Emilion are about 90 minutes away. Summer days are usually long and hot as the region has its own micro climate.
There are many festivals which take place in the area, throughout the year. During the summer months there is a host of musical events, together with local flea markets. Cognac is home to the famous 'Blues Passion' in July and musical events take place throughout the town during that period.
