The Cumbria/Lake District
Spectacular scenery, lakes and mountains, with great variety in a small area. Beautiful towns, with strong local cultural identity. Great food and drink, noted for its local specialities including Cumberland sausage and damson gin.
Settled by the Vikings, which explains many of the place names and local dialect, and cut off from the rest of England for most of its history, the Romantic poets made the Lake District a desirable place to visit, revelling in its wild prospects and dramatic landscapes. It is now the most popular place in England for holidays, and the adventure capital of the UK.
Adventure playgrounds at Mirehouse on Bassenthwaite, and Trotters Animal Farm are very popular with children and adults alike.
GoApe at Whitlatter Forest is a very exciting treetops adventure.
Cockermouth area
The lakes Buttermere, Crummock and Loweswater are very close, Loweswater a nice walk, with Keswick and Borrowdale a short drive away over the Whinlatter pass. Hiking, climbing and other outdoor pursuits are very popular, with many walks made famous by the Wainwright series of guidebooks. The C2C bike route passes close to the cottage, so bring your bikes or hire them in Cockermouth, but be prepared for hills.
Cockermouth is one of the few towns in the Lakes that retain its traditional look and feel, with individual independent shops on the tree-lined main street giving the town great character. There is also a farmers' market in the market square the first Saturday of each month.
Wordsworth was born here and his house is a National Trust property, with staff dressed for the 18th century running the house as it would have operated then, and many activities. There is an artists' colony in the area, so there are several art galleries with original works for sale.
Local carnivals take place throughout July. Popular events include the Keswick Jazz Festival in May, Words by the Water festival in March, Maryport Blues Festival late July, Cockermouth Georgian Festival and Keswick Victorian pre Christmas weekend.
