Home description
Situated on Whinlatter pass, Darling How is a large Georgian farmhouse with fantastic views of the Lakeland fells and hundreds of walks and forest bike trails right from the front door. The house accommodates up to ten people and is an ideal place for large family gatherings and celebrations.
Whinlatter is a great starting point for hundreds of walks, either through the forest, up the fells or along the lakeshore paths of Crummock Water, Buttermere and Loweswater. The visitor centre at Whinlatter is a couple of miles away and has café, bike hire and high ropes course (Go Ape), as well as a live video camera in the Osprey nest (May-August). Keswick is just 15 minutes drive away with its bustling town centre, boating on the lake and outdoor activities.
For groceries there is a Sainsbury’s in Cockermouth (10 mins) or Booths in Keswick (15 mins). There are a couple of pubs in the village of Braithwaite (5-10 mins) or for a special occasion there is Winder Hall in Lorton (5-10 mins).

The Cumbria/Lake District
Whinlatter Pass is situated between Keswick (7 miles) and Cockermouth (6 miles). In the heart of the Lake District the vally's of Borrowdale and Buttermere are easily accessable with there beautiful lakes and surrounding fells.
Cockermouth / High Lorton area
Whinlatter Forest is the perfect starting place to explore the Lake District, in particular the Northern Fells and lakes. There are a variety of walks right from the front door, and several well marked trails through the forest. Within comfortable driving distances are the lakes of Derwentwater, Loweswater, Crummock Water, Buttermere and tranquil Bassenthwaite (this being technically the only true LAKE - the others known as waters or meres).
It's a lovely drive from Darling How into Keswick, a busy market town (market day is Thursday and Saturday) with lots going on. Here you can go boating on the lake, hire bikes, take a trip to the "Cars of the Stars" Museum, the Puzzling Place, the Pencil Museum or even the James Bond Museum (all good wet weather activities for kids and adults alike). Keswick also boasts an indoor swimming pool with wave machine, the renowned Theatre by the Lake and a cinema (which also shows World Cinema films on a Sunday afternoon throughout winter).
Whinlatter is a great starting point for hundreds of walks, either through the forest, up the fells or along the lakeshore paths of Crummock Water, Buttermere and Loweswater. The visitor centre at Whinlatter is close by and has café, bike hire and high ropes course (Go Ape), as well as a live video camera in the Osprey nest (May-August). There is a recently opened mountain bike trail (said to be one of the best and longest forest trails in England).
How to get there
Leave M6 at junction 40 (Penrith) Take A66 signposted Keswick and Workington. Continue on A66 until you reach the large roundabout at Keswick (17 miles). At the roundabout, carry straight on, still on the A66 towards Cockermouth now. After about 2 miles, turn left to Braithwaite Keep on the road through Braithwaite and this will take you over Whinlatter Pass. Keep going and Darling How is 2 miles beyond the Whinlatter Visitors Centre - right up a forestry road which is signed to 'Spout Force'
